October 13, 201511 yr Alaska had now officially become the fourth state in the US to no longer celebrate Columbus day. Alaska joins Hawaii and Oregon in celebrating "Indigenous People Day" instead of Columbus Day, and South Dakota celebrates "Native American Day". There is additionally a smattering of cities throughout the United States that also have officially rejected "Columbus Day", and instead opt to commemorate the native peoples who came from the area rather than Christopher Columbus.
October 13, 201511 yr Author This guy gets a national holiday... "The Indians are so naive and so free with their possessions that no one who has not witnessed them would believe it. When you ask for something they have, they never say no. To the contrary, they offer to share with anyone..." "They willingly traded everything they owned... They do not bear arms, and do not know them, for I showed them a sword, they took it by the edge and cut themselves out of ignorance... They would make fine servants. With fifty men we could subjugate them all and make them do whatever we want." - Christopher Columbus
October 13, 201511 yr It aint like its a day off from work for anyone and most dont even know it was that day.
October 13, 201511 yr No problem, have never had the day off anyway and it's just another day without mail and banking service. I'm fine with celebrating others more deserving.
October 13, 201511 yr Author It aint like its a day off from work for anyone and most dont even know it was that day. Oh yeah? Did you get mail yesterday?
October 13, 201511 yr Oh yeah? Did you get mail yesterday? No clue, I only check mail on Thursday and Sunday.
October 13, 201511 yr Author No clue, I only check mail on Thursday and Sunday. The post office is closed on Columbus Day, all federal employees have the holiday off - paid. Banking institutions are closed on Columbus Day, and state employees and schools are closed in 23 states as well (Kentucky is not one of them).
October 13, 201511 yr The post office is closed on Columbus Day, all federal employees have the holiday off - paid. Banking institutions are closed on Columbus Day, and state employees and schools are closed in 23 states as well (Kentucky is not one of them). Wow, I had no clue. I didn't even know it was Columbus Day. Kind of silly to take a day off for a guy who didn't even discover the U.S.
October 13, 201511 yr Fargo, ND has renamed it. The dynamics in that area are interesting with the Fighting Sioux renaming just up the road in Grand Forks for University of North Dakota. South Dakota was way out there with this one, changing their name 25 years ago.
October 14, 201511 yr The post office is closed on Columbus Day, all federal employees have the holiday off - paid. Banking institutions are closed on Columbus Day, and state employees and schools are closed in 23 states as well (Kentucky is not one of them). Some are open on Columbus Day and some are not. The Federal Reserve is closed but some banks are open...
October 14, 201511 yr People are stupid, and that makes most decisions stupid. And when you elect them and put them all in one place, it's really tough to measure the amount of stupid. So, nothing really surprises me anymore. Indigenous people day. OK. How about indigent people? Do they get a day? Maybe they can have Indigent in Indiana day. I see most of them after they leave the pain clinic to have a tooth yanked. Fun times.
October 14, 201511 yr Do people get upset about everything ? Columbus is no hero of mine so it doesn't bug me. But every man or woman when looked at in a microscope has faults by today's standards. Every single person. Can we not recognize achievements without bemoaning every negative.
October 14, 201511 yr Wow, I had no clue. I didn't even know it was Columbus Day. Kind of silly to take a day off for a guy who didn't even discover the U.S. Finally you admit it !
