I have no problem with people being fired over Facebook comments.

It's a good read and cautions against the mob justice approach.

With that said I don't have much sympathy for these folks, but I also don't know if tracking people down and finding their workplaces is the best way to handle these things.

I bet those guys couldn't have been fired if they were union.

Where do you draw the line?

Can I fire employees if they continually spout off on Facebook about the President and I disagree?

Can I fire employees if they have a confederate flag as their profile picture?

Can I fire employees if they are telling everyone to get saved or they are going to heck on their Facebook page?

Can I fire employees if they call me (their boss) names on Social Media?

Can I fire an employee if a customer comes in and says they yelled obscenities at a ref during the football game last Friday and they have it on video?

Can I fire an employee for repeating a really bad Eddie Murphy joke on line?

Can I fire an employee for dressing as Hitler, Osama Bin Laden or a Klansman for Halloween...then go to a party and their photo ends up on social media?

With most employees being deemed "at will" then you do not need a reason to fire them as long as it's not due to age, sex, race, or religion.

This reminds me, I was listening to NPR a few weeks ago and they were doing a segment on job searching in the era of social media. They had a few "experts" on to discuss it.

Their advice basically amounted to "bleach your social media profiles of all evidence of your personality that isn't 100% conformist." They said to scrub your profile of anything that could be deemed controversial, including your political affiliation or stances on issues, they said never to post negative comments, and they said to post more about your work and how you improve profitability.

I could've gagged. It's not that they're wrong, but social media has a tendency to take the worst part of our society and humanity and amplify it. And in this case it's our tendency to shame everyone into behavior deemed acceptable. We police each other through shaming in real life, but it's multiplied on social media to the point you can't escape it.

A few states have enacted legislation to protect employees from adverse employment actions resulting from legal off-duty activities.

Looks like some people just don't get it with social media and have to learn a hard lesson. Employers as a rule have a lot of leeway in who they choose to associate with and if you want to be a moron, be prepared to go your own way.

We have plenty of these still employed where I work...no need for social media to thin the herd...they just keep piling up

Do you have any additional links/info on this? I'd be interested in reading that in more detail.

This is one that I quoted, but there are other links also.

As long as no reason is given. As soon as one is (didn't like their facebook post about politics), that opens the door for the fire-ee to possibly have a legit lawsuit, depending on the situation.

Which is why I don't have Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, Pinterest, etc., accounts. I have enough trouble with two email accounts and what I sometime post on BGP.

Yes, is the answer to all those questions.
