NKY Disappointment

Featured Replies

Who are the most disappointing teams (not including injuries) this year in NKY? In other words, which teams have underachieved and are not as good as many thought?

Just the kind of thread I would expect from the Soccer contingent.

Welcome to BGP, Mediocre Nachos!

In threads like this, you will get more traffic if you start with a list of your own, then others can chime in.

No one has really played a game that matters yet in terms of contending for a Regional Championship. If a team is 5-10 and they used those 15 games to find out who can play and what kind of team they have then they cannot be disappointed yet.

I don't have an agenda. Just wondering who hasn't panned out the way some were expecting. My short list is Dixie, Brossart, ND and Campbell. Not bashing any of these programs, just looking at some closer than expected wins and some bad losses, these teams jump out to me.

Explain how in the world ND is a disappointment...

Ranked 4th in State...with wins over #2 and #5...only 3 in-state losses, all to ranked teams...#1, #5, #12...with a big one coming up against #3 NCC

Hardly disappointing, or mediocre, Mediocre.

I knew I'd catch some flack for ND. They are solid but I've seen them step off the gas pedal too much in the 2nd half. The Highlands game was a direct sign of that. I thought Brossart would be tougher because they lost so much and they could play better with less by having more intensity. They are lacking the toughness needed to be a regional threat and they proved that against Bourbon. Campbell has to rely on their D because they have no speed on offense and cannot score against a solid opponent. Dixie doesn't know what kind of team they want to be. Many missed opportunities have led to L's.

Agree and don't forget the win @ St Ursula. Bad result against Highlands, but they can recover from that with back to back wins over a good St Henry and NCC.

The 9th Region will be very interesting, 3 maybe 4 teams have a legitimate chance of winning it.

On the flip side, which local teams have been a pleasant surprise and have exceeded expectations this season?

NCC has stepped up their game after losing Zimmerman. Highlands is turning into a very tough team and are going to be a tough out in the 9th tourney. SK is probably the nicest surprise. They are well coached and play very well as a team. They are solid all around.

SK has definitely not underachieved this season, they have done well under their new coach this year and I think they should be considered a threat to win the 8th.

I will also say that I saw them play last night, and was pretty disappointed in how they chose to play at one specific time in the match. There was a corner kick in the second half in which a girl took a shot to the head, she went down immediately, the ball carried across the box and remained in play. When the attacking team realized there was a player down they chose to kick it out across the end line even though they had a good scoring chance. On the restart, which was a goal kick, SK chose to put the ball back in play as if nothing had happened rather than returning it to the other team.

I hope this was just an oversight on their part and not how they would normally approach this sort of situation.

I'll say this and it applies to every team and every sport. The regular season is for figuring out what type of team you want to be/what type of team you are. Maybe a coach had a plan going in but then realized for whatever reason that the players didn't fit that plan. It's back to the drawing board then. The regular season is nothing more than glorified scrimmages for the real season that starts with the District Tournament.

Regarding the SK issue last night, several of the players, on both teams, had stopped playing at the point the ball was played out. Some of the field players and the Cooper coach were yelling to play the ball out. While a Cooper played played the ball out it was 50-50 who had control of the ball up to that point. I had no problems with SK, on any other team, in that situation playing the ball out as if nothing has happened.

SK is playing very good ball and playing well as a team. They have a tough week ahead.
