I think this is a non-issue for the reason Sandman gave in post no. 53 - Covington Catholic is a private school. The Redbook sets forth rules of the Kentucky Department of Education, not the KHSAA.

 

And I understand the difference between a donation and a business expense for tax purposes, but the Redbook defines donations as "gifts of real or personal property to the school from persons or entities outside the school system for use at the school or for the students of the school." I think that is broad enough to apply to this situation, IF the Redbook applied to Covington Catholic. But it doesn't.

I don't know if I've posted before about this but the word 'swag' is not high on my list of favorable words. People run for saying it when I'm around.

I guess AAU ball wasn't enough, now the shoe companies want a part of sanctioned state athletics too. Once this grows into a more widespread operation it will ruin high school ball as we know it. Nothing against Cov Cath though, they are doing what any other school offered a deal like this would.

 

I'm pretty sure shoe companies have been doing things like this for certain schools for quite some time now. It's just now getting to KY but I' d be shocked if there weren't hundreds of schools across the country getting free gear.

I would think (and I have ZERO inside info on this) that soccer would be next (if any sports are going to be added) because: their pipeline is also loaded, plus, Under Armour has a huge footprint (no pun intended) in soccer (they sponsor Xavier's ranked soccer program even though their Men's Basketball team is a NIKE Elite program).

I agree with you, and in fact that is what I told my son when we were discussing. Of course he did not like it, but thought it was cool Under Armour was doing this. He also now wishes he did not give up basketball last year to focus on baseball!
