Not Top 5, but here's many other outstanding players that are worth remembering that I'd like to give an honorable mention nod to that have yet to be mentioned.

 

I'm sure that there's still a handful of others that I am forgetting.

I think it was just an interesting stat, but not an attempt to prove anything...why the rage ?

I didn't think it was an interesting stat. Thought it was meaningless and just pointed that out. That's all.

Was having this discussion with a buddy of mine (SK grad) this morning.

 

He posed the following question:

 

"Is it crazy to think that even as state champs, that 2014 Covcath team wasn't one of the best 5 to come through the 9th over the past 20 years?"

 

A few arguments he made:

 

1. 08 Holmes team was deeper and if not for one of the best players to come through KY (Darius Miller), that 08 team cuts down the nets led by Henderson. (Also argued Ruthsatz was no where near the all around player that Henderson was regardless of what the "stats" say)

 

2. They would have been the 3rd or 4th best team in the region in 2003 because they couldn't have competed with all the size in the region that year. (I told him see Newcath in 14)

 

3. They had one of the easiest paths to the state finals that any team has had over the past 20 years from the 9th region.

 

4. The 04 Covcath team was better. Just as physical a team but with better shooters, and much more size across the board.

Legit points. In fact I would have said many of the same things in your post.

I'm not sure what this proves? You have two high level D-I athletes and the team is better with them on the floor?

Backs up no point to me at all. Every team at every level is most reliant on their two best players and that team's productivity is going to lessen when they aren't in.

 

This isn't rocket science.

 

As for the 98 Highlands team, Smith was one of the top 100 players of all-time in Greater Cincinnati (per Enquirer) and Lorenzen and Stegman were DI athletes. Pretty good starting point.

 

Look at their schedule, their wins and losses, and tell me how this team fails to matchup with others in the list.

 

People may not remember how good Smith was. I've only seen a couple of better players ever in the region. He was named MOP in the Beach Ball Classic. Tournament included North Carolina, South Carolina, Indiana, Boston College, Kentucky, and Georgia recruits among others.

I do not think anyone is saying the Highlands teams cannot be considered for the list but some prefer other teams that were deeper and contained more players capable of deciding a game. Smith was great player and Lorenzen was even more fun to watch. But if we are playing a best of 7 series between the teams there are other teams I think could prevail.

I'll say this, 09 Holmes won the State Championship game with Ricardo Johnson spending most of the night on the bench in foul trouble and Elijah Pittman fouling out in overtime.

The "supporting cast" them two had was unbelievable.

I played with all 3 of them. You are giving Randy too much credit on the hardwood. The 96 team beats 97 by 10. Smith was the best player in the last 20 years. He would have owned Pittman. However, Hensley was a better coach than Messmer and the 09 Holmes team was much deeper.

Certainly entitled to your opinion. But SK underestimated Stegy in the 98 regional to their demise. As I said earlier, he was better than people thought. As a senior, he was a very good player.

 

96 Highlands team may have been more talented. 97 team was the best of the three because of Glazier. My argument is that the 98 team belongs in the top five.

 

I will grant your point on coaching. But, I think depth is way overrated. It's a 32 minute game played by 17 year old kids. How many subs do you need. Smith never seemed to need a breather...
