JJ had a better outside shot and had a little more bounce but wasn't as versatile with the ball as Ric. JJ could beat you off the dribble and get to the rack but didn't have the pull up and mid range game that Ric had.

 

I recall JJ cracking his head pretty hard on the floor in the 2009 championship game in an air-sucked-out-of-Rupp Arena moment. I still wince when thinking about it. Thankfully it turned out not to be as severe as it looked, but it sure looked pretty nasty.

I'm sure others will disagree, but I would probably take both the 2002 & 2004 Cov Cath teams over the 2014 state championship team. Of course, the '14 team has one thing that neither of the other two have, which is all that matters.

 

Correct . . . I disagree. 2014 had (3) of the most dynamic players to ever lace em up in Park Hills. 1-Nick Ruthsatz (schools leading scorer, Winner), 2-CVH (soon to be schools leading scorer, best frosh school history, Baller)

 

3- Bo Schuh - I believe doesn't get enough credit for his contributions. All you Colonel fans, think back on how many athletic 6'6" wing players we have had. Yeah we had some inside posts guys, but no one his size matches up with his abilities in the open floor when it came to press D & breaking the press D.

 

Also, known fact, Colonel Crazies were at all time best in 2014.

Speaking of athletic wings, the 2002 team had Brian Lewin who was an athletic 6'6'' wing. Lew didn't have Bo's athleticism, but Lew was an outstanding HS player. The '04 team had plenty of athletic size to matchup with Bo. I think the '04 team's size would've created a lot of matchup problems for the 2014 champs.

 

Again, we're splitting hairs here and the 2014 has the state championship ring -- which is tough to argue with. All 3 teams (as well as the '06 regional championship team) had exciting seasons but fell short...except one.

Brian was a very good player, true that. He coached my son & TAC's son in AAU ball a few years back. Good guy!

 

Yep, we are splitting hairs . . . just nice now to have a run of multiple good teams to create some friendly banter.

I will say this with regard to top players, first, Derek Smith would be the best player from HHS and in fact would be my overall #1 and I would second the well-stated analysis regarding Elija Pittman and lastly I would add Greg McGraw to the list of top players from HHS with only a continuing back problem from him being in this discussion. For those lucky enough to see him in a classic battle with Arrez Henderson their senior year would agree.

That was a 15 round title fight. Both players were out of this world that night. Arrez just had a little bit more help.

Lew was a very good player and got his ride to NKU . Even better person. But I don't think anyone who knows him , played with him or against would describe him as athletic. He was a very good basketball player.
