For me the best High School player I played with was Billy Vogt from NewCath, he graduate in 1979. Billy wasn't very big, but was the best open field runner I ever saw. He wasn't big enough to play RB in college, he played DB for Morehead in the early 80's. He averaged over 9 yards a carry his Senior year. Sadly he was never given the ball more than 15 times in any game.

 

The best I played against was "Fast Freddie" Jacobs from Wyoming, who went on I believe to Penn St.

If they played at NewCath and went to Notre Dame... 1981 was Mike Kiernan, then later in the decade Frank Jacobs went to Notre Dame and caught the winning TD in the Fiesta bowl in 1988. I don't think there was a NewCath Player who went on to play at ND from the 1990 or 1991 squad. May have been a heckuva player but didn't go on to ND

I may be remembering it wrong, maybe was "being recruited" by ND. But, he was a heck of a player and big. I venture to say he played in college somewhere.

As an all around player and athlete, give me Eddie Eviston. 6'3 185 or whatever, LEGIT 4.5 40 (see Georgetown electric eye times). Had the spread option been so prevalent in the late 90s he would have been a 2,000/1,000 guy for sure. Also intercepted 9 passes.

An Unknown NT - Newport Central Catholic

I had to play center my senior year because our center broke his thumb, and in the playoffs we played NCC. Their NT was a "mountain" and went on to play at Notre Dame. He was good and huge. I was average size and, as a center, started every play with one hand between my legs. I had a pretty good game against him, but after the game I honestly could barely walk. I was sore and so tired the next day I couldn't do much. Not tooting my own horn, but I left everything I had on the field that night. He was on the same level as DeAnthony Honicker above. The former line coach at Raceland still talks about that game and frequently asks me, "Do you remember that NT from NCC that you went against your senior year". I just say "Yay, I remember him". Then he says, "I don't know how you blocked him".

He's thinking of Brian Myers. He was 6'4 or 6'5 and about 330. He was a DI lineman, he just didn't make the grades. Extremely nice guy off of the field, but very aggressive on it. I was a water boy for that game. I remember it well.

The best played with would have to be Jacob Tamme & Brodie Overstreet. Brandon Smith and Seth Tamme are up there as well. Jacob went on to play at UK and is now in his 8th year in the NFL. Brodie went to Wake Forest and had unfortunate eye injuries which cut his career short. I have no doubt if he stayed healthy a stint in the NFL was in the making for him as well. Smith and S. Tamme went to WKU and were there during the tough transition to D-1 FBS.

 

The best I played against would have to be Curtis Pulley (Hopkinsville,UK), Corey Peters(Central, UK, Atlanta Falcons), Kelvin Turner(Danville,Marshall,EKU), Isaac Sherrer(Highlands, elected not to play after High School) and Mike Mitchell(Highlands, Ohio, NFL)

1966. Gene England O/DT at Glasgow. Went to Alabama. Ferocious competitor on the field. Genuine good guy off the field.

Played against probably Derek Smith. He was like a grown man playing vs HS kids.

 

Played with at NewCath I say an amazing TE/DE by the name of Kyle Stevie. Good size smart player who really knew the game and some of the softest hands I have ever seen. ; )
