August 10, 201511 yr The history of the front office is they let them play out their contracts. They will with AD. Not saying I wouldn't cut him, the front office won't. When was the last time they cut a starter in his 2nd contract with them? Daltons contract is different than most of their contracts they give out. They intentionally made his contract team friendly so they could get out. If they had the up most trust in him, they wouldnt have gave themselves an easy out from his contract after two seasons. They basically take very little cap hit if they release him after this year. Not to mention I think they are higher on McCarron than many believe. They are going to give Dalton his full shot to prove he can be more consistent and get them over the hump this year. However the Bengals have so many free agents after this year, Mike Brown is a business man and won't want to pay someone that top money when he could use that money to sign more of their own free agents. Especially when they may have another QB on the roster for cheaper who could possibly give them at worst close the same as Dalton. This obviously is a conversation we have to revisit after the year. Hopefully when we do it is you being right, because IMO if Dalton is back that means the team did get over that playoff hump.
August 10, 201511 yr And there it is. In the last ten years they have lost 3 1st round games at home. They earned home field advantage and then lost at home. Excuses aside, that's pitiful. Again the apologists will creatively excuse it away, and the realists will say they're really not, very good. Rinse and repeat Your right there it is again. Its hard to say someone like you is a realist when apparently you don't have a grasp on what is a good team and what is not. If they are not very good, then yes I could understand someone saying well it was luck that they made the playoffs. However a not very good team doesn't make the playoffs 4 straight years. They are exactly what they are, a talented team that has an at best average coach who is bad with in game adjustments and a QB who stinks in big games. So you say you are the realist, but not sure how you can say may assessment of them is not realistic? A talented team but lacking in the two biggest spots head coach and QB. That doesn't make them a not very good team as you say. However if anything shows the overall team must be good to overcome that to even make the playoffs. However being weak in those two areas kill chances of doing much more than just playoffs. But hey you are the realist...
August 10, 201511 yr The sad thing about the Cincy fan base is 1 playoff win will convince most of them that Marvin is a great coach and will say "I told you so" about Dalton. 1 win will forgive 12 years of failure on the coaches part and 4 years of failure for the QB. That's just how they are. For or years they will always point to 2015 as the reason Marvin should go into the Hall of Fame of coaches and will put Dalton as the best QB this franchise has ever had. Can't disagree with you. Even though I have disagreed with your assessment of Marvin Lewis is the worst head coach in the league, I do agree that he should have been gone awhile ago. He should have been gone after 2010, and then definitely gone after the 2013 depressing of a game lost to the Chargers in the playoffs, and then same last year. For me one playoff win won't change that for me this year, and same with Dalton. Unless they get a first round bye and then win to get to the AFC Championship at least. Then I want both Lewis and Dalton gone after this year.

I believe Dalton could have gotten a lot more guaranteed on the market. He had to been given some pretty good assurances on his future or I don't think he would have signed. I don't think he nor his agent are dummies. Dalton seems like a guy that looks at these things thoroughly. Again, unless he gets injured pretty badly or arm problems, he is going to stay. If he fulfills the contract it is great money for him. We are in that purgatory the Bills GM talked about. The Bengals are going to be good enough to be in the playoffs or just miss for a few more years. Starting QB's won't get to them in the draft most years. If a good one does, do they draft him or do they compare him to AD and think the risk (and almost every pick is) is too much for a 1st rounder. McCarron has NOT taken an NFL snap in a Preseason game or real one. Who knows if he will be anNFL starting QB. Nobody knows that. Before the draft, most thought not or he wouldn't have dropped to the 5th round (unless they all knew he had an arm injury, then maybe he would have gone 4th, maybe 3rd). They are not banking on him this year for sure and probably not the two following. One thing we do know. Mike Brown and Marvin will not cave in to fan pressure.
August 10, 201511 yr If the coaches believe that McCarron is even with Dalton, Brown will drop Andy to save that $.
August 10, 201511 yr I watch the Bengals now because I enjoy football, I have no expectations of championships. That is just how it is.

I completley agree with your last line that they won't give in to fan pressure. However I think you oversell how much faith they even have him. Mike Brown will pay his top players money lately, just like Green will get soon. However he wouldnt even give Dalton much more than two years guaranteed because he is not sold on him either. They want Dalton to prove he can finally be consistent and get them over the hump. Mike Brown is a smart business guy and won't want to continue paying Dalton top money if he can get out of his contract for cheap. Marvin Lewis and Mike Brown have even said we have to put as much talent around Dalton for him to even have a chance to be successful. Meaning they even know Daltons play is not good enough to raise the play of others around him. I believe they even know they could probably win around the same with another average at best qb. This is Daltons last chance to prove otherwise. So I guess we will continue to agree to disagree and revisit this after this season.

August 11, 201511 yr Hey. I know the want to blame the QB and the coach, but quite frankly the whole team underperforms in big games. Some call it being exposed Well what do you call the rest of the teams in the NFL then? So you say the Bengals get exposed as actually being a not very good team. Yet every year they typically beat most of the teams they are suppose to beat and even have came up with wins in the regular season against other teams who have made the playoffs. So hmmm is that what a good team is suppose to do? Win the games your suppose to and win a few against other good teams? Maybe I got it all wrong I guess doing that means a team is bad? But once again apparently your the realist, and not someone who also let all the negative stuff create clear bias to forming a negative opinion rather than a realistic view. I know people have liked to say I drink the kool aid, blah, blah, blah. However at the end of the day who usually has been more right about the true realistic view of this team? I have said they have the talent. Yet where also hear how they have the worst coach and qb in the league, yet they still make the playoffs which shows talent level is there correct. Have I ever came out and said this team will make the super bowl or even win their playoff game? I think only the chargers playoff game did I say they would win and I was wrong. However other than that I have never made bold predictions about winning playoffs. I just say once you get there anything can happen. Seems to me that seems to be a pretty realistic view of this team. The main things I have argued is when people have said they are horrible or just not very good, case and point this discussion. But I forgot the ones who say they are just bad are the real realist...
August 11, 201511 yr Its very simple this is not a bad team or just an average team. They are a good team, but not good enough. In the playoffs the teams who win have good coaching and qbs who can make plays when it matters and we lack in both those key areas. It's very simple. Now if people want to complain about Mike Brown keeping Marvin Lewis and sticking with Dalton this year, then I can't disagree with that. This is a good team, but should we expect a playoff win with the status quo probably not. Which is why I have said all off season I would have taken the chance on playing McCarron this year. The move could completely backfire and we just suck and not even make the playoffs. But who knows it could have worked out and got us over the hump. It was a chance I would have been willing to take. All these realistic view points on the team in things they could and should have changed I could get behind. Its when people say they just aren't good or suck and then act like they are the realist is what I think is wrong. That is not being a realist, that is letting your negative bias of the team effect the real realistic view of them.
August 11, 201511 yr A good team should win a home play-off game at least once in the last twenty something years. Maybe this is the year?
August 12, 201511 yr A good team should win a home play-off game at least once in the last twenty something years. Maybe this is the year? Expect the same from last year, the Bengals haven't made enough changes to make a difference.
August 12, 201511 yr A good team should win a home play-off game at least once in the last twenty something years. Maybe this is the year? Didn't realize this was the same team and players over the last 20 years. I felt like most of the current players who make up the team have been apart of 4 straight playoff teams. Which would show that they are not a bad team. A bad franchise yes, because as a franchise you can take all the years into account and as a franchise they have overall sucked. However as a current team of players that make it up they do not and facts do back that up. Bad teams don't make playoffs 4 straight years. But hey continue with with the bias negative opinion that is effected by the overall franchise sucking, and thinking that makes your opinion realistic.
August 12, 201511 yr Got to think with the number of free agents and potential of the team that this is the Make of Break year for the Bengals....... Does no Playoffs equal Marvin Gone, Andy replaced, Smith Gone etc. and a rebuilding of the Bengals? Does Playoffs and a Playoff win equal Marvin forever and Andy forever, free agents re-signing? I think this is it........ could no playoffs bring a decent draft position and a QB selection and a new Head Coach. Could a Playoff win or two move the Bengals into the elite realm of the AFC? Denver is getting old, NE can't sustain forever, Pittsburgh defense is old, Ravens are old, could Bengals and Indy become the new Pats and Broncos? With the O-Linemen drafted this year, I can see the Bengals looking for their future QB in the next draft. I think they are just getting the pieces in place to sure up their line before putting a young franchise QB in there. They don't want the same thing that happened to Carson where they ignored the line after drafting Carson only to see their franchise go down the drain with his injury.
August 12, 201511 yr This team is a team that has some really good players and good enough to win in the post season, but this team is also poorly ran and coached which is just if not more important than the players on the team itself. Coaching has hurt this team as well as the management. When your current QB is 3-11 in primetime and playoff games that tells me 2 things. 1. the QB just doesn't have "it" and 2. the Coach is horrible at preparing a team for a big game. Both have been proven true over the years.
