Do Police Really Want Body Cameras?

Featured Replies

I'm pretty sure more folks are killed in automobile wrecks than by cops. Why not make it mandatory That all autos have them?

Cost? I am all for them. The less "he said/she said," the better.

So if the Doctor is incompetent and kills grandma on the operating table that's cool...go to protect your privates!

When you are in surgery there are more people than you can imagine seeing your vulnerable parts. Some hospitals do record surgeries already without you even knowing.

Is it OK if the news does a Freedom of Information Request and wants to show a video of police walking through your filthy house when they come to arrest your spouse for an outstanding warrant. Lots of privacy concerns from body cameras for those on camera during everyday encounters with the police.

I am well aware of what goes on during surgery. The camera on a surgical site usually avoids exposing other personal body parts.

How open and honest can you be with your doctor knowing everything is being recorded? It is very difficult for most people to discuss personal private matters.

Many people are extremely embarrassed about "their privates." How many people would not go to the doctor knowing they would be on camera?

Yes, medical malpractice is a problem, but recording everything a doctor or nurse does will cause more problems than it solves IMO.

How many people will not report rapes, or domestic violence if they know they're going to be on camera?

Do any of you want to wear a camera so your boss can see you every move? No of course not. But most of us are not put into life or death situations. Should all truck drivers or for that matter all vehicles have to have dash cams? My brother in law gets a message every time one of his employees gets within a few feet of their homes. He can track them at any time.

Not sure I'm a huge fan of it. Great to say someone else should wear one, but in reality I'm not sure any of us want big brother up our back sides all day long.

I don't wear a body camera, but we have both cameras and sound survellience in every public area where I work. There are no blind spots. My office is right across from some restrooms and there is a camera right outside my office. I always feel awkward when I have to go to he bathroo, because I know someone is watching me go in there. On the other hand, I sometimes do a silly hurky-jerky dance in the hallway just because I know someone is always watching.

I don't understand this question. Can you expand?

Sometimes victims want to talk though things privately without going on the record.

Exactly! Patients are the same. I would also say that I sometimes, very effectively talk to patients in terms they understand and appreciate. I would never talk like that on camera. As you said earlier, experienced discretion, an incredibly effective tool, would be gone.

We are on the same page.

However, I fear eventually (years and years into the prevalence of body cameras) that the powers that be will demand everything be recorded and nothing be private. Like I said, just a fear.

Of course like everything else, the Cops will be the test group and they better get it right or else...

I can certainly see an officer's hesitation to a body camera... But it's definitely becoming a necessity with the state of the world today.

I don't think their opinion/s will matter much longer. Reality on reality's terms.

The DuBose shooting is a prime example of why body cameras are needed. It is pretty obvious that it was a bad shoot. Without the camera he'd likely have gotten away with his story. The other 2 officers initially backed him up. With the suspect dead they'd have had nothing to contradict them. Having this footage likely prevented riots. There are many more cases where the evidence would have backed the officer.
