Ram
Here's the "non-brief" version. 04/22/15-Final Bylaw 23 Changes Necessary Due to Emergency Adoption of NFHS Task Force Recommendations | Kentucky High School Athletic Association
AllenR
How many schools can afford attorneys to help the planning of practices?
CKYFAN
"Beginning on Monday of the week the first scrimmage is played by the school, each school may participate in “Thud” or “Live Action” drills and game time simulations (not including contests or legal scrimmages) for no more than ninety-minutes per team, per week" This was the rule that jumped out at me the most. Some teams attempt to go full-pads four days a week with contact almost everyday. Anxious to see how teams adapt to this new rule. I think it is a good rule because each kid should have received significant reps on proper technique all summer. High school and college athletes alike wear down late in the season because their bodies are burnt out from the physical practices. If you are still full pads/full contact for every practice during the season, you have done something wrong as a coach in my opinion.

So you get 10 practices in full pads is all you are allowed now, then 90 minutes a week?
CKYFAN
So you get 10 practices in full pads is all you are allowed now, then 90 minutes a week? I read the rule as you can practice in full pads as much as you want, you just can't have "thud" or "live action" drills for more than 90 minutes. AllenR
Seems like someone is trying to lower the quality of play, set the bar at the weakest link. How do they monitor this? Require teams to submit videos of practice? Submit lesson plans to KHSAA for approval before practices???

Require teams to submit videos of practice? Submit lesson plans to KHSAA for approval before practices??? Coaches are supposed to keep logs (there are official forms on the KHSAA site) and have them available for audit. I believe a certain percentage of teams will get randomly audited every year (without looking up the rule, I think it's 10 percent). Sorry, but I'm not sure how you can justify that the KHSAA is intentionally trying to lower the quality of play. It makes zero sense, and there is no benefit at all to doing so. Constant contact eveyday in practice doesn't do anything to help the quality of the game either. This is all about safety. I'd say most coaches are on board with limiting contact. Some guys overdo it though, and hence rules like this.
ShamrockChamps
It should just be 2 full pad practices a week when the season starts, Tues & Wed, period, good grief, why make this so complicated?!

Then on alternating Thursdays all schools are required to play Laser Tag instead of contact or harsh glares. Of course since Trinity has a Laser Tag place not too far away this will be yet another thing people say we have an advantage in. I am just hoping they don't mandate anything about White Castle's on Monday's because then Trinity will really get put under the microscope. barrel
Most teams do walk through on Thursday so there is no contact. I haven't read the link but when this came up on the coaching boards I believe hitting shields did not count as contact. There are ways around it all. GCHS
By my reading of the rule, form tackling drills would not count as "contact," as there is a pre-determined winner. If you have live practice Monday thru Wednesday, that gives you 30 minutes of day of contact periods, outside of form tackling drills... I would submit that going more than that is silly, anyway.
