I actually have no vested interest in this "discussion" BUT.....

why is that parents that volunteer their time and efforts always get slapped in the face? Why is it that the parents who never turn a hand to do field work, or fund raising, or WHATEVER, always complain about the ones that do? Has anyone considered that some parents actually are interested in the sports programs without the need for reward? I know it causes great distress to some but believe it or not, alot of kids who's parents do volunteer actually are talented kids with or without involved parents. It's just a fact!! My theory is, if ya think the garbage needs picked up or the building needs painted, don't sit and gripe about the guy who does it, grab a bag or a brush and help out-NO WHINING!!:irked:

If a kid is truly a player, it doesn't matter what the parents do. Borderline players must rely on their parents.

We're talking about a school though, where the Coach sets up the schedule for the concession stand and tells them, you dont work it your kid doesn't play.

Whats wrong with that? 10% of the people will always do 90% of the work at any level. Go to any varsity game and you will see parents of varsity kids that are front line players working that are not supposed to, just because somebody did not show or was just extra busy. why take advantage of that 10% they would like to see their kid play to. Now that the jv season is over lets see how many jv parents, come out to help, (THIS WOULD BE NICE) If you have time to burn up this message board (3 pages) you have time to sell a few hotdogs.

Not connected to this program but I have watched them over the years. The players are usually fundamentally sound, with an excellent knowledge of the game.

 

Coaches I have spoken with around the state, are very similar to other successful programs and they ask no more, than other schools. I also believe the part of "do your part or"....if actually happened, is more of a motivational point for some parents. At the same token, I'm sure some comments from parents get back to the coaching staff and than opinions can be formed.

 

The overall goal of any Baseball program, is parental, booster and school involvement off the field and the coaches/players on the field. A lot goes on behind the scenes to play games nightly, tickets, grounds-crew, concessions, announcers, foul ball retrievers and some parents want to watch, but not always give of their time. It's very frustrating as a coach, to have some that could but won't help, yet they are usually the most vocal when criticism occurs and they often share that with their son and it can carry over.

 

Get involved, do more than your part. The help is needed, regardless of the playing time of your son and that should never be a reason to volunteer. Let the coaches to their job...."coach" and prepare the players for the next level. I don't mind babysitting when at home, but not ballplayers and certainly not parents....:thumb:

I believe concession stand work SHOULD be required of all parents (provided they are physically able) if their child is on the team. Field work and grounds maintenance are all another story. I see no reason why every parent cant contribute one night. How many home games a year? How many players on the team? I would think that no one parent would have to work more than 2 home games.

At Pikeville EVERY parent works concession at the direction of the coaches. As far as the field goes it is 2 or 3 parents who do it all. Everyone should get involved as it is very rewarding. The problem is that everyone is spoiled and we are NOW raising a generation that I dont want taking care of me when I get old. Parents who complain are generally the ones doing nothing!!

Well since a coach made the schedule I'm sure the parents will still be showing up to avoid cuts next season.

I do my volunteer work, more than alot do. I show up and do what needs done, offer to step in when someones got problems and can't be there.

 

What my point is, if you have a kid from a poor family that doesn't have any way to get a parent to give a rats butt if he's a ball player or not. But he's a killer ball player, just aint right that at boyd he wouldn't be give the shot to become a player. That's the cold hard facts of life at boyd.

Yea that's right they won't get cut because they won't make it past first round tryouts and booster meetings. As soon as a kid with no parental support shows up he's not even given the chance to play as there would be no one scheduled to work the concessions with him and untill I see otherwise out there to prove me wrong there's not much else to say about it.

I've gotta agree with RB on this one. I know how these coaches are and I really don't believe a kid in that situation would be cut for that reason. If that were the case, then the school board would be coming down on them, and that has not happened.

I've seen alot of attitudes adjusted by either poles or SR leadership or a combo of both
