If as you said, someone is half the player as a junior that means they became twice the player as a senior. You can't fairly use their class one way in a debate then turn around and argue against the very same principle - a player CAN make a tremendous improvement coming into their senior year.

We see it over and over and over again, how 5 year seniors and players given up on, end up making a contribution before all is said and done. It happens at all levels and HS is an age where tremendous change can occur in short periods of time. To say thats it, there's no way for this kid, is a view that is too often based in arrogance, ignorance or indifference much too often IMO.

 

So what if someone hasn't made varsity as a junior? It makes no difference.

Running off a junior (assuming no problems) at this point benefits the baseball program how?? Not at all in my view.

The upside is that one of these times a junior may turn out to help your program as a senior - no one can deny that.

The downside is what??? You have one more player working out through the offseason? You have one more player in line during tryouts? Those would be very pathetic excuses to run off kids for a public school program.

 

This is High School. Too many of these high school coaches think much more of themselves and their own ability than they have reason to. Why do so many people play along?

I'm not saying they can't get better. I'm saying they can! That's why it upset me that they told these boys going into their jr year to find a new sport. These boys had good seasons and IMO i think next year they will be even better. But they were told look for other sports? That's what I'm saying is wrong. I'm saying give them a chance in the spring to show if they want to work on improving and come back bigger and better. Not chase them off at the end of a decent season. Had these boys not started 95% of all the JV games I could see saying dude can't use ya. But these were boys that started constantly and played hard and good.

As for the origin of this thread. I will agree that telling a kid he might as well not come out next year is two things. A bit early to make that decision and maybe improperly handled. A believe honesty and communication have to be considered when talking to a potential player. The honesty part might be something like "Listen, if you want to be apart of this team and contribute to its success, you are going to have to dedicate yourself to get better at (whatever his shortfalls may be)."

 

A majority of high school players improve based on the "players" hard work and dedication. I saw a kid that was DHed for his entire junior season. He busted his butt all summer and winter. His senior year, he hit close to 20 HRs and went on to play D1 baseball and get drafted.

Yes, a JR can help out as a SR, but if he is on JV as a JR then he would have to really bust his butt in the off season to contribute as a SR. But you are correct, every kid should at least get a chance to try out and make the coach either cut him or keep him at the beginning of a year, not at the end before the next season even starts. But cutting kids happens everywhere all the time in public schools and there is no way you can keep every kid that comes out.

 

I totally agree with your opinion on the coaches 100%. The reason so many people play along is for fear of repercussions against their kids. Just the other day, some kids had earned a trip to Kings Island for succeeding in academics throughout the year, but the team lost a ballgame the night before and the kids were told they were not allowed to go to Kings Island because they had lost the game the night before. This is the kind of actions that should not be tolerated, but they have to be for fear of the kid suffering the consequences.

It is also a big difference in a Soph going to his JR season and a JR going into his SR season. I think that a Soph kid is most definitely too young to give up on. Most of these kids are in the year that they will really mature as young men. Heck, most Sophs aren't even driving yet.

How do you figure that the 2004 team was better than the 2005 team?? BC improved at almost every position for 2005. The 2005 SR's (Seasor,Hughes,Hensley, and Sturgill) were replaced at their positions by Wamsley,Gatrell, Sargent, and Branham. Plus the underclassmen got another year under their belts, so I truely believe that 2005 was a better team than 2004, and their record showed it.

 

I firmly disagree...I believe the 2004 team had more upside than the 2005 team did...But that was mostly because a lot of the 2005 team was underclassmen.

They read certain people in the Community posting forums of how they were cheated enough to believe it too...That also spills over to the rest of the team...think about it....

How is it discipline whenever the trip was preapproved, but since the team lost the night before, they dont get to go??:confused: The kids had already paid their money because they were allowed to go, but instead they, or actually the parents, were out the money and the kid out of the trip that he earned for good grades.

I just spoke with a source close to the team and one of the kids WAS a bad attitude problem. If you have a bad attitude....you bring the whole team morale down. Therefore I am saying nothing about it other than "If you have a bad attitude, leave it at home." Until I hear further on the matter.

I've seen alot of attitudes adjusted by either poles or SR leadership or a combo of both

I'm not a Boyd Countyite and I don't mean to butt in. but I'm confused about which coaching staff taught the Boyd County pitchers to throw 85 mph? Which coaching staff showed Gatrill how to throw so hard. And which pitching staff let those guys all grow to 6'1" 190 pounds.

 

I guess my point is your arguement seems to be which coaching staff gave these players talent. Well, I can answer that question. None of them. A good coach get's 100 percent out of a player's capabilities. A great Coach get's 110% out of a player's abilities. But the bottom line is there has to be some ability. Along with drive, desire and confidence. You can't coach any of those things.

 

Well those 6"1 guys work there butts off,no dought what about those 6"5 guys that also throw 85 mph that this years coaches would not let play?

Yea things would be different if they treated all the players with attitudes the same, they don't though. They just use it as an excuse on certain kids. What's the worse they're ever gonna do make em run poles regardless of what they've done? How about making those kids with attitudes run poles? Heck how about making the coaches with attitudes sit out their vacations and run poles too.
