July 22, 201511 yr Suarez is actually a slick fielder he's just not a great fielder right now because he struggles with the easy plays. That being said I could see Suarez being moved to left but I still think Cozart gets traded this offseason. Suarez is a definite upgrade offensively over Cozart and I think the Reds will have better options for LF going into next season than moving Suarez there. Winker, Rodriguez, Waldrop or someone acquired at this seasons deadline will be the LF. Of course this is assuming Billy holds onto his CF spot and Bruce doesn't get traded. Who knows there's even a chance Byrd is back, I doubt it but this is the Reds. Cozart was going downhill quick before his injury, he likely would've ended the season right around .250 avg with a .300 OBP which is about his norm. He isnt getting any younger either. Suarez had a .951 fielding percentage in the minors, very much in line with his .945 percentage this season.

July 22, 201511 yr Pulled these from scouting reports on Suarez coming up through the Tigers organization. Seems to be the consensus that he is a plus defender and has all the tools but hasn't put them all together yet. As far as tools go, Suarez profiles as an above-average to plus defender at SS, showing the "class Venezuelan infielder" tools that prospect hounds have come to notice. He has very good hands, good range to both sides, and has solid footwork. He has an above-average to plus arm that is capable of making all the throws from the SS position as well. His defense is his bread and butter, but also sometimes a concern. Suarez has a plus arm, and really great hands. He’s also pretty rangy, and has the athleticism to be a big league Shortstop. I’ve noticed that he is exceptionally smooth on double play feeds, and I love his arm action. I think he can be a top end defender in the big leagues if he continues to improve. I do have some significant concerns though. My concerns begin with his fielding techniques and how he handles ground balls hit directly at him. He uses his soft hands well, but really exaggerates the funneling of the ball to his body, and he sometimes loses the ball in that process. I’d like to see him shorten up his actions and become more direct in his transition from fielding the ball to releasing his throw. Suarez just began playing shortstop full time two seasons ago, and this is more of a mechanical adjustments, than a gripe about his tools or potential. In fact, I’d go as far as to say that his hands are so good that he trusts them too much sometimes. I am interested to see how he progresses this season on his routine ground balls. At this point, he is a guy who makes outstanding plays but is inconsistent on routine ones, but again, I think that is more a lack of experience, than a lack of skill. My other concern with Suarez’s fielding is his throwing accuracy. There is no questioning his arm strength, as he gets great carry on his throws and can throw from several arm angles. I have seen Suarez air mail three balls now in about 8 games, and that is not going to cut it at the big league level. I think the problem begins with how early he gets the ball out of his glove and into the throwing position. He holds the ball in the cocked position for much longer than the average shortstop and has some pretty long arm action. His long and whippy arm action give him that great velo and carry across the diamond, but it also invites inaccuracy. I’d like to see him field more in rhythm and shorten his stroke up, as I think he has the arm strength to still make any throw on the field. His long arm action is more of a fielding concern than his funneling for me, because it is a tougher fix, as he has probably been throwing that way his whole life. Overall in the field, Suarez has the potential to be a very good big league defender if he continues to get the quality reps.
