I heard an attorney today say that there is no legal obligation to disclose his whereabouts plus if you're working as a journalist you are protected by the 1st Amendment.

I honestly didn't know. I'm totally in support of the 1st amendment as it applies to journalists not being prosecuted for what they write but if a reporter can use it as a shield to protect them if they have contact with a known criminal or known criminal activity then I'm not so sure that's good.
