How are the Spartans faring these days? I know they had considered dropping out of competition in the senior division in a couple of years past.

 

Beechwood now has a middle school program for at least the 7th and 8th graders...I'm not sure whether or not they are competing in 5th and 6th grade.

 

Cov Cath's Colonel Youth Football is now open to 2nd thought 8th grades, and will be competing in the Greater Catholic Youth League with the youth teams from the Cincinnati GCL schools.

 

Seems bad for the boys in green.

I believe South Kenton plays at TMC Sunday against the Union Raiders. The Senior team plays out at Ryle Saturday.

There was a season not too long ago where the Spartans didn't field a Senior team, and they've been touch and go ever since Beechwood's Middle School program started about 5 years ago. There's been a lot of change in the NKYFL at the senior level since Middle School football really picked up. Taylor Mill has never fielded a senior team, The Raiders Senior team folded 4 or 5 years ago, The Spartans senior team is now on and off, and likely done. The Union Jags have left after 4 or 5 years, Ludlow has no Senior team, and the team that replaced them got caught using illegal players. A few teams are still solid, but it's an ongoing struggle of reaching out and adding teams when existing teams fold.

Why is Colonel Youth playing in the GCYL?

 

They joined the GCYL last season for two reasons:

 

1) Colonel Youth Football wanted to expand to have a 5th and 6th grade team (and they've now expanded all the way down to 2nd grade). The Northern Kentucky Middle School Football League did not offer a place for a 5th/6th grade CYF team to compete. The GCYL allowed for it.

 

2) In the Northern Kentucky Middle School Football League, CYF was not allowed to have any players participate from public school systems with NKMSFL teams in place. In other words, if a student was currently attending Beechwood, Turkeyfoot, or any of the other NKMSFL schools, they were not allowed to play with Colonel Youth Football - whether or not their intention was to attend Cov Cath for high school. The GCYL allows Colonel Youth Football have players from public schools compete.

Why is Colonel Youth playing in the GCYL?

 

They moved there 2 or 3 years ago, which paved the way for their middle school team to begin play in the GCYL last year. As far as the nuts and bolts and specific reasons, I'm sure someone on BGP is in the know. But, really, they had nowhere else to play. They couldn't play in the NKYFL because there is no way to define a territory as they pull from all over NKY. I think they had played in Campbell county in the new league, but that was a small league. Playing in the GCYL gave them an opportunity to play varied competition, and also against very high level teams. Plus it allowed their middle school kids to be able to play with them regardless of where they went to school, something the NKMSAA did not allow.

There was apparently a proposal to start elementary football 7 or 8 years ago. Obviously, it never got off the ground due to many issues...costs, where and when to play games, etc. As far as I know, it has never been seriously considered since. If it did happen, it certainly would cause problems for the NKYFL. But honestly, I don't see it happening anytime soon.

Did I hear that the youth teams are running the wishbone? Not exactly the same offense as the HS team. As a matter of fact, couldn't be any more different. Shouldn't these youth teams be running similar sets as the HS?

I know the SR group runs the power I and I along with a 53. The 53 makes sense because SK is a 35 team but I'm not sure how close the teaching is. One of the selling points that is used to get players is that they say they run the same stuff and that they are an SK feeder program.
