The president will recommend updating overtime rules so that salaried workers who earn less than roughly $50,400 per year would be guaranteed time-and-a-half pay when they work more than 40 hours in a week. Under the current rules implemented by former President George W. Bush, salaried workers must earn less than $23,660 per year in order to be automatically eligible for overtime pay. The president announced his intention to make overtime reforms last year, but the details of the plan have been kept secret until this week. The president is expected to discuss the proposal later this week during a visit to Wisconsin. Details of the proposal were first reported by Bloomberg. In a blog post on The Huffington Post Monday night, Obama said that "too many Americans are working long days for less pay than they deserve," and that his proposal would help assure that "hard work is rewarded." "That’s how America should do business," the president wrote. "In this country, a hard day’s work deserves a fair day’s pay. That’s at the heart of what it means to be middle class in America." June 30, 201511 yr The $23600 figure is way too low. Obama's is too high. I would personally peg it at $36-38,000 but stiffen up the other requirements to make sure it's truly a salaried position. Too many managers not managing. There could also be hour restraints.

His isn't too high in my experience, I know that there are thousands out there in "Salaried" positions that are scheduled and expected to work 48 plus hours per week. When I first started my career and was salaried, I worked 50+ hours per week every week for 20 years...during a good portion of that I was compensated way above these limits but there are a ton of people working in various "Management Type" positions that work long hours and are just told "That's part of the job".

June 30, 201511 yr I am very conservative but I have no problem with this. People who are working more than 40 hours should be paid overtime if making $50k per year. People making six figures...that is different but $50k is certainly not considered "high income" this day and age.

June 30, 201511 yr To be fair, being salaried definitely has some positives as well. For budgeting purposes it's great knowing that every week my paycheck is going to be the same whether I work 50 hours or 10 hours.

I love this move. They are not given, those employees choose to take those jobs. Lets not act like "they didnt know"
June 30, 201511 yr Author My salary is based on 9 hours of work a day, and I'm working 9.5-10 regularly. If you don't mind what are you scheduled on a normal day? 8-5 or 8-6, or something similar.

Most "Salaried" jobs I've seen if you are scheduled 8-5 it count's as 9 hours because as a salried position you may or may not get lunch on any given day. Does it matter if it counts as 8 or 9? You're salaried. You may not get lunch one day, you may take 2 hours another. You may stay until 7 one day, you might cut out at 2 another.
