Your missing the point, these situations all revolve around one thing, employees choice. The employee chooses to work for that employer. There is nothing say, you have to work there. If the employee doesnt have the skills to work for another employer, is that on the employee?

 

I don't understand where the mentality of "the company must treat me better and change their ways" comes from.

 

You are hired to work x amount of hours for x amount of salary...company needs you to work more due to business conditions, you don't think you should be paid for that extra time?

Your view of reality is distorted. People don't just walk away from decent jobs because of the hours. It's not that simple.

I drive over an hour one way every day, so thats 2 hours a day travel, I choose to do that, as I knew where this job was located.

I will agree with you on this, they shouldn't suffer, if its a continual issue, find somewhere else to work that you wont suffer.

But if the employer tells you the job is a salaried job that standard hours are 8-5 with some extra hours here and there, and from day 1 you're working 60+ hours every week, they completely misrepresented the job to you. Don't you think they should be paying you a more fair compensation?

Most places when hiring salaried workers will tell them there is an expected number of hours...no one I know hires salaried employees with a blank schedule expecting them to work 100 hours per week just because they are magically salaried...good employers will give an accurate picture of what it is like to work there before they hire someone. Most employers will no abuse their workers just because they are salaried...but some do and always will, because they have the attitude that you do. We'll work you how ever we want and and if you don't like it we don't care you can leave.

Because some people have circumstances that make it impossible for them to just up and quit a job.
