There was one from the mid 2000's here in KY. One of our local judges represented the girl in this case when he was an attorney.

That's stranger than fiction. I'm 99% certain I went to elementary school with her.

What's your point? That a broke dude living in a basement apartment that sticks an American flag up in his window rather than buy curtains should bother me? That it should bother me as much as a symbol of racism so pernicious and deeply ingrained that it led men to treason?

 

I guess it depends on what you have done in your life to protect that dude living in a basement….my guess is that we have had some different reasons for our feelings about this particular flag, just like everyone else with the Stars and Bars.

 

It's cool that it doesn't bother you, don't worry about, there's lots of people out there doing their thing so you can freely express your opinion and feelings, no harm no foul.

Nope, I'm saying you are free to choose, just that I have more and varied feelings about our current state than our past.

I had this discussion with my veteran father just a few days ago. I agree that most don't know or follow proper flag ettiquite. However, the confederate flag issue is still quite a different ball of wax.

 

Could be, but no less important to the individual in some cases, no ? My point is not to diminish any individual's feelings about the Stars and Bars, it's theirs, they can own it, but not respecting our current flag may hold very significant feelings for others as well. I'm not trying to compare the politics of a flag, it's the individual feelings that people associate with symbols that is of issue.

I get it if you are a civil war historian and some preserved artifacts are your thing, but let's be honest. The vast majority of the folks I've come across that are displaying the Confederate Flag on their front bumpers are not going to be confused for historians or displaying it for that reason. I cringe every time I see one.

 

I do as well. It truly makes me uncomfortable when I see it.

There comes a time when the warped impression overcomes the original intent. If the acts committed in the name of loyalty to that flag or symbol are so heinous that they are condemned, so too should the flag or symbol.

This is not a new argument, but the politics involved make it very distasteful. If we cared so much about how bad the symbol was before, why didn't it get resolved ? Why didn't Walmart, Target and Ebay stop selling this symbol of hatred prior to it being the most current politically correct thing ? Does that mean that any and all retailers that didn't renounce this symbol prior should be boycotted ? I question the genuineness of some responses in this matter, if it was a symbol of bigotry and racism last Wednesday then where did they stand on the issue then ?

Sometimes it takes something extreme for people to see the light. I mean, at least we haven't let it get to the point that it got to in recognizing that the Holocaust was real.
