I assume then that this teams on this list are being compared to the teams in their class, eg Mayfield at #3 . No way they are the third best team in the entire state, but their accomplishments versus the teams in their class could make them the third most accomplished. Is that the way you're ranking them?

Really? Assuming we left Trinity and Highlands as one and two, you think Mayfield could beat Male, St. X, Manual and a host of others for that spot? Y'all can play outside your weight class, nobody doubts that, but you lost a close game to McCracken County and Manual (4th seed of the super district) beat them by fifteen points.

 

Calpreps and Maxpreps had Mayfield at 7th in the state, for whatever that is worth.

I would be shocked if anyone has had a better first four years than Collins did which should put them in the conversation. However, I would think most people would hesitate to put them in the top 25 given the fall off last year. Hard to put them in off 4 great years vs other teams that have the much longer history until Collins sustains the success longer. Still the fact that they have half as many wins as some of the other teams while playing a third of the games makes them a tough call.

Just for fun, and using the same data you have already compiled, I wonder how it would look if we assigned a point value for each category and looked at those numbers. Not sure what would be equitable, but we could do something like...

 

.25 pts (1/4 of a point) for each win

10 pts for each regional title

20 pts for each finals appearance

30 pts for each championship.

 

 

I realize this would be a slightly different animal than your 15 yr ranking, but we could divide each team's score by the # of years they have played football and get an average score, which would allow a comparison for Collins, Cooper, South Warren, etc.

In a perfect world I would give a full 1 point each for a First Round and 3 points for a Second Round playoff win as well.

 

Reason being... (hypothetical talk here) if Caldwell County plays a bunch of scrubs during the regular season for a decade and racks up 85 wins, and DeSales is playing 5 Non-District games against the best 6A schools in Jefferson County and wins 85 games while playing 20 more playoff games... but in that span of time DeSales reaches the Regional Finals 7 times but loses 5 times int he Regional Finals... should the value of DeSales 85 wins be the exact same as Caldwell's 85?

One thing that also has to be accounted for is not to duplicate.

Trinity has 13 Regional Titles, 13 Finals, and 11 Titles.

Conventional thought would be

Rockcastle Co. is too high in my opinion because they have been mediocre over the last 8 years, winning 43 and losing 50 over that time period. They haven't advanced past the 2nd round of the playoffs during the last 8 years either.

8. Bowling Green- 7/6/3.. Purples wish they could re-do 2014 so they can stick their neck into arguing for a Top 5 spot.

The data is solid but is skewed toward regional titles and above. Teams can be successful but get beat by the same powerhouse year after year in the regional finals, etc. (Highlands has done it to alot of programs). Lack of regional titles and championship appearances/wins puts some programs too low on the list when they could have had a very tough class or very tough district but won 8-10 games regardless (just didnt have the playoff success).

 

Its very difficult to rank teams from across the state against one another when some have favorable districts/regions that allow them to get to the title game whereas if they were swapped they would have 0 regional titles and 0 final appearances, etc.

 

The point I am trying to make is that you might consider introducing a dynamic into your equation to eliminate or minimize this biasness. Hypothetically if you put Ft. Thomas Highlands in the West half of the state and Trinity in the East half (since 2000) both programs would succeed, but you would also see other programs get much further and climb the list as they would have more championship appearances, regional titles, etc. If the data presented was without biasness, then the rankings would be consistent regardless of where a team was slated for playoffs.

 

This can be done by establishing a coefficient for each team and applying it independently. Coefficient's can be based on SOS, Opponents SOS, point differential, home/neutral/away games, etc. This would give us a more accurate look at the mid tier teams as the top of the list is spot on.
