Rumor I was always told was that he lit up the minor league. Was an awesome player for the White Sox. His only downfall was he played behind Frank Thomas and never got called up.

Interesting. The White Sox dug into the KY HS baseball ranks twice that year. E-towns Demond Thomas ( who was also one of thr states best QB's going into his senior season before choosing not to play) was also drafted by the White Sox.

He was drafted by the White Sox. He played most of his career at the Triple A level. Probably not what he wanted, but he ended up being one of the most known Triple A players in the game. Played in multiple Triple A All-Star games and was named MVP at least once that I know of. I don't have his stats, but they were pretty high the last time I looked. I saw him play on TV in the All-Star games several times.

You are correct, he was Frank Thomas' back up, basically. I do remember, late in his career, there was question if Frank Thomas was going to be put on the DL and Juan was going to be called up, but Frank Thomas ended up limping though the season and it never happened.

AAA Contracts are nice money... but one would think he could have probably found some school to let him play both sports at least until he was drafted again higher. I am sure there is no way to know Frank Thomas would be the HOF'er he would be.. but most Minor Leaguers have an option to opt out to go to another organization.

 

Thomas was a beast... I could have very easily seen him having a NFL future as like a FS. Freak physical specimen and athlete. I have heard many former Belfry guys talk about what it was like trying to tackle him and how he was like a bull.

He could have played D1 baseball, D1 football and small college basketball. He had multiple offers to play D1 baseball and football. Juan was just not college material and playing baseball straight of high school was probably his best option.
