I need some suggestions; Murray, KY

Featured Replies

I know bugatti lived in Murray a long time, and there are other BGPers from the area, so if you have any info, I'm all ears.

My son will be attending Governor's Scholars at Murray State this summer for 5 weeks. He is really excited and Murray was his top choice, plus he got the area of study he wanted. It is unfamiliar territory for us, however, and it is a haul for us to get there, but we are looking forward to seeing some of that part of the state. I'm not really looking forward to that drive back home after dropping him off. :(

Basically we will take him there on June 27 and then pick him back up on July 31. In between there is one day we can visit him, July 11, and one day only. On all 3 of those occasions, we will have to find hotel rooms, etc.

So I am looking for a couple of things. Any hotel suggestions would be greatly appreciated, however, with trip advisor and the like we can probably find something suitable on our own.

Moreso, on the family visit day, I am looking for suggestions on what we could do with him for fun. And since we will be there a few different weekends, restaurant suggestions would be nice too.

Thank you all in advance.

Congratulations to your son, Watusi! That is awesome that he is a Governor's Scholar. He will enjoy that 5 week experience. And you all will enjoy the college opportunities that will come his way after this summer!

Congrats on the free ride 2C. And there are 2 really nice lakes close. REALLY nice lakes. Check out the state park lodges there. Very nice.

Patti's 1800s Settlement is a GREAT place to eat, if it is near where you are traveling. Up near the top of LOL, maybe near Grand Rivers. The town of Hazel - just south of Murray and on the KY/TN line - is a nice place to hunt antiques.

Patti's and get the pork chop

The lake area and LBL are great to visit.

Indeed, it's where mcmama found mcpapa

As it stands, nobody in KY offers the degree he is wanting. Grrrrrrr.

Impossible.

It wasn't founded until 1890.

You know what's funny about that? My son went to UE because no one in KY offered his planned degree program. Then, the year after he enrolled @ UE, Bellarmine began it's program. And in the end, he graduated with a whole different degree. :lol2:

My nephew was a GS. Went to WKU to get his degree as a History teacher. Graduated with a Bachelor's in Poly Sci, just graduated with his Masters in Public Service Administration, and is going to UL for his PhD in Something I Can't Remember, but Has To Do With Political Science.

Is there anything that he could at least get his Bachelor's in that could transfer credits for Post Graduate work? GS scholly is no joke! Major savings!

I kinda wish our son had stayed in state and gotten the GSP money, but he wouldn't do it. Everything ultimately worked out for the best, though.

Meant to post here sooner but was out of town last week and slipped my mind.

I love Murray, spent almost 6 years there while going to school. Would move back and live there in a heartbeat if the opportunity ever arose.

With that said, I don't know that I'd say Murray proper is really a place that offers a lot in the form of visiting and hanging out for a few days. However, there are a lot of options around the Murray area.

As far as Murray, of course you want to take a tour of the college. Hands down, by far, IMOP the best public university for a kid to attend if they have their area/school of interest/study there. Personally I don't think it's even close.

Got to eat at Martha's and have to get the rolls at Sammons bakery. Both local staples, and Martha's serves up about the best chocolate and coconut cream pies (homemade) that you will find.

A good option for overnight stay might be Kenlake State Resort park near Hardin. Pretty area, quiet and close to Murray. Of course you have the dam and KY lake and lake Barkley close by for fishing/sightseeing. Patties is also in that area (Grand Rivers) as someone mentioned, but I have to be honest here, I am NOT a fan of the 2 inch pork chop. I think it's fairly dry and bland. It's something to talk about though, won't see it any other place that I know off. But personally I think they have better food options. There are also a few antique shops there and other stores.

Speaking of antiques, if that's your thing, Hazel, south of Murray is well know for it's antique shops.

Paducah is worth the hour or so drive. Go downtown to the art district. They have really done some good things there the past several years. And if you visit Paducah, got to visit the Pork Peddler down by the river near where the old Executive Inn used to be. Great buffet. Some would say have to visit Starnes bbq as well.

If you are into gold, take the sticks and play KY Dam Village. Good course and there are other good courses in the area as well, including Boots Randolph at Lake Barkley SRP. Land Between the lakes is a nice visitors attraction as well.

Oh, and don't forget to visit the local city softball fields where me and my team(s) became school legends dominating the softball world for 5 years. Just saying.:)

We made a really quick trip this weekend. It is a 7 hour drive for us, plus time for stops. We almost got washed off the road Friday afternoon in Leitchfield by tornado like winds and heavy rain. Had to stop and hunker down for 20 minutes or so there. Kind of scary.

We got there kind of late Friday, ate dinner at Shogun (the Kobe Beef was incredible) and then breakfast at Panera before heading over to Murray's campus. By the time we got to leave, it was 6pm EST and so we didn't make it home until after 1am.

Needless to say, we didn't get to see much of Murray that day.

We do get to go back on July 11 and spend a whole day with our son. I will be looking for some fun things to do with him that day. I'm open to suggestions.

1) I knew Leitchfield would come in handy. :D

2) Isn't he WK as mind-numbing as we warned you?

Pretty boring. Yes.

We actually stopped for gas at the exit just prior to Leitchfield. While we were inside getting drinks, the radio was blaring a tornado warning, and the radar showed some bad storms on the way. My wife wanted to stay in the convenience store.

Of course, being a typical man, I said it didn't look that bad and I thought we could get ahead of it. BIG MISTAKE. We barely got on the road and a major storm hit us full force. I'll be honest, I was scared. I was never so happy to get to the Leitchfield exit and find some place to park and calm our nerves.

My wife didn't say "I told you so", and I am thankful for that. I did apologize profusely for being stupid though.
