Man Filming Austin Police Has Phone Taken And Is Pepper Sprayed

Featured Replies

What does that have to do with your comment about the police assaulting a non-violent person?

Person standing in a public place filming. The cop knows it's a cell phone. By force takes it and damages the phone. Uses force to snatch the phone. Yes. I believe a crime has been commited by the officer.

Cue the "how did she know it was a cell phone?"

Yea. Grabbing the phone was a mistake. In fact she probably said she shouldn't have done it after the fact. However police officers don't typically get a do over and the media loves a good story.

I am already on record in this thread as saying it was improper for the officer to snatch the phone.

Specially to M75, in this case I do not believe the officer committed a crime do to various factors. However, I do believe the police department would need to replace the phone if it was damaged in any way.

You just reminded me of the South Park episode about John Smith.

Ignorantia juris non excusat. Law term. Not knowing dosnt excuse the crime. Officer I didn't know I was speeding. Still a crime.

Look at it this way Guru. What if that same person snatched the officers phone or camera and threw it. What would have happened? Human factors? Bad day? Under stress? Nope arrested on the spot.

Can you at least attempt to make a meaningful analogy next time.

That is something else I was thinking about. I am sure there are many examples of firearms out there made to look like smart phones. And all it takes is for an officer to be wrong one time about that and you are dead.

We have an angry mob mentality in this country and it is going to get worse before it gets better.

Think about the majority of the national incidents involving the police, most of the them involve an angry, law breaking, out of control, mob.

To the bolded, are you really being serious?

Better keep reading.

The officer clearly crossed a line grabbing the phone and destroying it. No question.

But if they weren't listening to back up and he wants to fire pepper spray. Fire away. No problem with that.

Better keep reading.

What does the rest of the paragraph have to do with a statement that has little to no basis? Many examples out there of firearms made to look like smartphones? That's some Bond gadgets.

We all know you are anti-cop. If you want to debate any real issues in this thread fire away but don't waste my time.

In general, do you think officers need more/better training on citizen's rights when filming and how to handle those situations?

So many of these situations that foster bad feelings toward the police could be avoided if they did not react to filming the way that they do.
