So in the 4x200 CCH was the favorite and had a big lead heading into the last runner (Erpenbeck). Dropped baton. CCH doesn't win. PT got the two points they needed to win the state title.

 

It is amazing how often a state track championship hinges on stuff like that.

 

I know a lot of folks that say that the only sport more boring than track is field. Give me a tightly contested track and field meet if you want to see some sports drama.

Sadly, I could not attend. My car went above my pay grade — literally — and made an executive decision that Lawrenceburg was as far as it was going last night, and she limped back to Bardstown on the back of a tow truck after a frustrating and expensive four-hour odyssey.

I'm curious about something in the boys' 3A triple jump. Here's the state champ's line:

Runner-up got 46-01. Why wouldn't Brooks try again for a record? Or was he in a bunch of other simultaneous events and essentially said, "I'll play these" when he figured out nobody could top him?

 

I'm no expert on track, and don't totally understand all the strategy about it in terms of how you use your athletes while pursuing a team title. Henry Clay looks to have a comfortable lead. He did also win the long jump, but in a much tighter margin, and won high jump.

At least one of the years my daughter participated, it was at UK. Also at Paul Dunbar HS.

I can;t speak for him, If I were to hazard a guess, it would be that he was saving himself for the high jump (unless it went first), which is his premier event. He missed at 7'0" three times, which he has jumped in the past, and which would have been a state record. Looks like that's where he focused his energy.

Records are falling at the 1A meet. Congrats to Raceland's Conner Messer breaking the 1A pole vault record with a vault of 14-7 1/4.

 

Messer also scored 40 points by winning all of his events (pole vault, high jump, long jump & the 110 High Hurdles).

Jaron hit the 47' 9" on his 2nd jump. To my knowledge, no one else in the state had been over 47' this year but him. The way the triple jump and long jump events are structured, all the athletes jump 3 times. After everyone has 3 jumps in, the top guys get 3 more jumps. Defending triple jump state champ Robbie Lofton was sitting in 2nd place but between the first three jumps and the finals I believe he ran in a relay race and you can see that his last 3 jumps were not really near his 46' 2nd place jump. Jaren chose to save his legs for the long jump which took place after the triple, but kept an eye on the triple in case he needed to jump there.

In boys 1A:

It is hard to believe Brossart can't field a top notch football team. The athletes are there and this is the proof for anyone who doubts it. Congrats to the Mustangs on the state title.

Congrats to St. Henry and Brossart! I second McPapas sentiment about exciting track meets. Weather was great all weekend and the talent was at a very high level. In AAA Dixie Heights was the highest placed NKY boys team at 12th. And Campbell County was the highest placing girls team at 13th.

 

Over 138 National Elite Performances this weekend.....that's pretty strong folks. Reflects how fortunate we are in the Commonwealth to witness a high caliber of track & field athlete.

I took over a 1000 pictures of the AAA meet with a NKY eye vs a Dixie Heights eye and will post a link to share those once I've edited them and cleaned them up. I saw pANDA from a distance as well. That guy is too fleet o foot for me. We might get lucky and see some of his pics also.

The fastest 100m times where in the 10.7s makes me wonder how accurate they are. I know FSU Jalen Ramsey ran a 10.8 for FSU and I read Deon Sanders ran a 10.4 his first time runninh 100 meters.
