April 16, 201511 yr So, if a fireman catches an arsonist leaving a burning building, does he or she get a pay raise? If a police officer, as the initial responder, rushes into a burning building and saves a small child, does he or she get a pay cut?
April 16, 201511 yr Folks, pay is based on available funds AND the supply of qualified candidates and the demand. It's why I asked if the policing would get better if their pay was increased. Guru thinks it might. I'm not sure. Do cities/counties have the funds to pay more? Would they get a ROI if they did? Is the current pay impacting the ability to serve the community? It's not a matter of risk or danger. If and when the police can no longer get enough qualified candidates to keep the city safe THEN and only then will you see a change in pay plans.

It's why cities increase pay compared to surrounding communities to get qualified candidates to apply with them instead of their neighbors. A sudden increase in pay isn't going to make police work better . That would suggest they are working their hardest now.

April 17, 201511 yr My point is your making entry level money and risking your life, your entitled to mistakes. If folks want better, pay more, require more training, etc....... if a bullet gets me home at night with my 900 dollar check at the end of two weeks, so be it.
