Just because I don't think Firefighters and Police deserve the same amount of pay doesn't mean I am anti anything.

It all depends on the location of the job. Fire fighters in some towns make several runs per day and have working fires weekly. In Somerset for example the city fire dept has very few runs per week and only a few working fires per year. In the same town the city and county police answer 100's of calls per day. While both jobs are dangerous the local police officers have about 1000 times more contact with the public in possible dangerous situations than the fire department does.

Most firehouses have nearly double ambulance calls to fire calls. That is the largest litigious side to firefighting/ems. You have to be meticulous how you note things in reports. and be prepared to answer to a judge on how you wrote your report 3 to 5 years later when those things tend to end up in court.

Correct. Paramedic/EMS workers are highly skilled and should be highly paid.

Interesting around here most of them are combined. Aside from maybe large metro depts or cities that contracted out private ems for they're city. But I think contracted ems has really gone to the wayside the last few years.

I think Laurel County is still Contracted EMS. When I was in Prestonsburg many years ago there were two or three ambulance services. Fire with EMT Firefighter rolled to all medical calls then called "Next Available" to transport to the hospital.

 

Somerset first joined the EMS/Fire several years ago, but an issue with pay for non-ems firefighters or something like that cause them to be split up again.

SA is a very large city, but here, they are separate. I did live relatively close to a fire station in an area with a pretty high population density, and I did see a fair amount of fire trucks.
