Grant County Football Coach Kevin Siple on bullying

Who is going to help the coaches quit bullying the kids? This has been going on for generations, in the name of making them men. IMO, the coaching staffs need to look in the mirror before trying to help others. Perhaps it starts at the top and lead by example.

Anything we can do in the school systems to make it more inclusive is a great idea. HS can be hard for those kids with less socialization. Athletes generally are more outgoing and keep to their 'herd'. Hopefully they realize they can make a difference for younger kids and those that are less social.

I agree Olinepride that a coach doesn't have to do it, but I guess what I'm asking is are we making a new expectation for our coaches?

If a guy goes 10 -20 over 3 years but he contributes to the well being of the school and society should his job be saved or how about the converse 30-0 but his kids may not display the best morals.

If the college game is any indication the first guy is fired and the second guy gets an extension.

Sooo...who decides who the "weak" kids are? Is this something he's expecting the athletes to pick up on? Just a question, not trying to put a damper on the idea.

One of the proudest moments I can remember when my son was in High school was a story that another parent told me. She said she heard from her daughter that at lunch one day one of the kids who was very shy and a freshman was getting harrassed by some of his classmates in the lunch line, my son walked up to the bullies and not only made them stop, he then had the kid who was getting harassed sit with him and his friends at lunch. A underclassman getting to sit with some of the upperclassmen and football players did wonders for this kids confidence and he was never bothered again the rest of the year from what we heard.

Never been so proud of my boy than when I heard that story. It doesn't matter who or why someone is getting bullied, just stopping it and standing up against it can do so many good things. I love what Coach Siple is wanting to do. It not only builds confidence for those being bullied but also teaches the players how to handle have and show compassion towards others.

That's my kind of kid....proud of him.

I see your point as well.

If I had a choice between going 10-20 with a team that is full of quality young men or going 30-0 with questionable kids that are super athletes, I would choose 10-20 every time. Winning is important, but at what cost. If a school would fire me because of my record only, then it is quite obvious that I do not belong at that school. My second year as an assistant at Powell County we went 1-9. They could not have been better students. Quality kids over quantity of wins.

Just put the Golden Rule to practice each day.

Here is a coach who is trying to use his position to do good for students in general - not just his players. There are good and bad coaches, just like good and bad kids. Most coaches love the kids they coach - by a huge majority.

Not sure why you are turning a very positive thing a coach is doing into a negative about coaches. Coach Siple should be commended for doing this. My guess he has no motivation other than helping kids.

Also - there are a few comments regarding where a coach's responsibilities begin/end. I dont think this falls under the heading of a "responsibility" for a coach. But - it sure is a great thing for them to get behind and support!!!

Athletes are "cool". If a coach can get them to use this "coolness" to display compassion for others......PRICELESS!!!

Don't know much about Coach Siple but I'm now a fan. He gets it.

Whoa! cmere, do you need a hug?

I just asked a question. If you read that as a negative, I can't help that. I like coach Sipple and I think he is a good coach. I think it is a great idea to stop bullying. Who would argue that? Not I.

He writes articles such as this and sends them out on the coach's list serve, weekly. He's a credit to the coaching profession and truly tries to make the world a better place.

He does this weekly?!? That is one man with a whole lot of class who people should model after. Bravo Coach!

I do know Coach Siple very well and have grown up with him playing sports along with his cousin and the irony of the whole thing is Coach Siple's nickname...:thumb:

For those in the know we can chuckle but the sensitivies pls just cover your eyes and ears for a moment...

FWIW, Coach Siple does indeed get it...

Here here! Love it.

"It's cool t be kind!"

I like this quote. I respect anyone stepping up to take on an issue like this.

Socially, I believe we need to make a better effort at exposing bullying for what it is...insecurity. It is the venting of an insecure person imposing their physical or mental will on another often for the sake of impressing others or simply as an outlet for their frustration. When it is accepted that it is NOT cool and it is the activity of a mentally and emotionally weak person, I believe headway will be made.
