Belfry Football 1949-2005

Featured Replies

Belfry started football in 1923 and has fielded a team every year since that time, to my knowledge. I am not certain about the years during WWII.

Unfortunately, there are no existing records prior to 1949. Lots of changes during those years, including moving to a new school and losing the BHS gym to a fire could have contributed to the loss of the records. I have heard lots of speculation as to what happened to the records, but the bottom line is they don't exist.

Here is a breakdown on BHS' football records, and overall coaching records since 1949. Probably won't interest many, but to Belfry fans, it is something to reflect upon. If you played or coached with or against any of these men, I'm sure you have lots of memories of those days.

I would love to hear the stories if you have them. :thumb:

Don't mean to thread jump, Belfry has had a long and proud tradition for sure:thumb: . I just wanted to say that Raceland celebrated it's 80th year of football last year. I will leave it to the Belfry fans now.

Watusi, there are some in the community that have spoken to the local BOE member and expressed interest in looking back at the Williamson Daily News and tryin to pull what info they can from the paper those days.

Someone mentioned your screen name as someone to help spearhead this, are you interested?

I'll bet that was a funny conversation, talking about a screen name. lol.

Actually, been there done that and it will be fairly fruitless.

The WDN didn't cover Belfry football in those years and about all you will find is "maybe" coverage of the annual Belfry/Williamson game. When they write about that game, they would sometimes give Belfry's record up to that week. It was frustrating, to say the least.

It would seem to me to be more fruitful, with the power of the internet, to contact the schools we used to play and get up to date records from them for their series against us. It wouldn't be perfect, and would be tedious, but it would be a good start.

If anyone has any old yearbooks prior to 49, that may be a good avenue to search too.

Wasn't '49 the year you graduated 'Toots?

Bill Benedict (if it is the same man) is married to my aunt and lives in Lexington. He was a football coach at Elkhorn City in the late '50's so he could be one and the same. I will ask him next time I see him. He is about 81-82 years old now but as far is in good health. Small world.

Yep, we wore leather helmets with no facemasks and we had to make our own footballs in shop class.

Yearbooks are a great source when doing football research. I also know the Courier-Journal printed weekly scores back into the 1940s. If you can find a library that has the C-J on microfilm. Maybe the Herald-Leader also.

Have you tried the News-Express?

No, not personally. I'm not sure if anyone else has. Where are their microfilms kept and can they be accessed by the public?

I know that alot of microfilm exists in college libraries. I know that Morehead's library has microfilm from the 1800s.

Im not sure, but if you called the paper and told them what your trying to do they might help.

I love old records and seeing how other schools have done in the past, good job getting these. I'm also doing this for Rockcastle County currently, no records exist from 1972-1984, I have found many on microfilm and still searching. I think this is something that is very important to a program because of the history and tradition it can showcase to the younger generations at the same time making the older ones proud.

I think you are right 3 Wishes. Being a Boyle grad there is a lot of talk about the Rebels recent success and how horrible the program was in '92 when Smith came to town. It was in bad shape.

But what is often overlooked or forgotten is that Boyle had some solid teams and winners before that era (just not the state playoff success they currently have). Boyle actually had consecutive winning seasons from '74 through '83. Among those teams there were big victories over the likes of Danville, Harrodsburg, Bardstown, Henry Clay, Lincoln County and Somerset.

When I was a substitute teacher at Boyle in the late 80's it was shocking when I talked to some of those kids that they had no idea Boyle used to be a winner and a solid program in Central Kentucky. In fact when he first arrived there Chuck Smith used that history to inspire his early teams to win citing that there was a tradition that they could recapture and take to greater heights.
