Great, great game. During regulation I thought CovCath had it for sure. Their offense was clicking, making it look easy to get the shots they wanted. At the same time it looked like Owensboro didn't get many easy baskets. in the overtime things changed and covcath seemed a little out of sorts. Not sure if maybe they got tired?

 

That said, what a well coached and disciplined team covcath is. They flat don't make many mistakes. You have to play well to beat them.

 

And Owensboro played well. Congrats to them and good luck.

CVH hit a 14' jumper to give the Colonels a 51-47 lead with 2:23 in the fourth. He never attempted a shot the rest of regulation, and was held to only one shot and two FTs in OT. Owensboro did a really nice job of preventing touches, and that, coupled with Schuh's DQ was probably the difference in the outcome.

Well I seen Owensboro play and win 4 games in a tourney in Eldorado IL...I could tell then this team was special. Very proud of the Red Devils

Boys Sweet 16 | Owensboro beats Covington Catholic in overtime

 

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Aric Holman and Justin Miller are the stars of the Owensboro High School boys basketball team, but don’t forget the “garbage men” who have helped the Red Devils reach the state final for the first time in 35 years.

 

Guards Darion Morrow and Jacoby Harris combined for 32 points and made several key plays as the Red Devils beat 2014 state champion Covington Catholic 69-65 in overtime in Saturday’s semifinals of the Whitaker Bank/KHSAA Sweet 16 at Rupp Arena.

 

“Aric and Justin get all the ink, and (the guards) take out the garbage,” Owensboro coach Rod Drake said. “That’s what they’ve done all year. Our perimeter guys are as tough as anybody’s. …

 

“When it’s time to step up and knock down shots, that’s what they do.”

 

Morrow scored 18 points and Harris added 14 as Owensboro (30-4) – No. 16 in the state in The Courier-Journal’s Litkenhous Ratings – advanced to the state final for the first time since winning the title in 1980. Drake was a member of that team.

Boys' Sweet Sixteen semifinals: Owensboro's 'warriors' oust defending champs in OT

 

Owensboro is justifiably known for the inside play of 6-foot-9 Aric Holman and 6-7 Justin Miller.

 

But the Red Devils are more well-rounded than that reputation might imply.

 

And it was a true team victory Saturday as Owensboro found a way to score a 69-65 overtime victory over Covington Catholic in the semifinals of the Whitaker Bank/KHSAA Boys' Sweet Sixteen.

 

"Aric and Justin, they get all the ink," Devils Coach Rod Drake said. "And these (other) guys take out the garbage."

 

With the win, Owensboro (30-4) reached the state finals for the first time since winning it all in 1980. This is the school's record 43rd appearance overall, in search of its fourth title.

Very entertaining game. Both teams played hard.

 

From the CovCath side, missing the front end of a couple one and one's hurt and the ball bouncing off the hands of three people before ending up in the Owensboro player's hands for a dunk was a killer. Morrow's threes were daggers.

So proud of this CCH team. Guilty as charged- never thought this CCH team at the beginning of year was a top 4 team in state. Amazing accomplishment. Special shout out to Bo Schuh who's family has always been there for mine.

CovCath's repeat run falls short

 

LEXINGTON – Covington Catholic won the 2014 state title at the KHSAA Sweet 16 in an overtime thriller.

 

Saturday night's first semifinal went to extra time after a last-second regulation 3-pointer by Matthew Shumate tied the game at 55 against the Owensboro Red Devils.

 

The Colonels couldn't recapture their OT magic from last year, however, falling to Owensboro 69-65 in a state semifinal game at Rupp Arena. The Colonels were unable to become the first team to repeat as state champion since the 1990-91 team from Fairdale, who was honored this week as part of the KHSAA effort to recognize 25th-anniversary champions.

 

"I don't think after last year anybody thought we would be here," said Cov Cath head coach Scott Ruthsatz. "We're here with discipline and unselfishness and a great attitude. These seniors really helped me in my four years here. Probably one of the most winningest senior classes in Covington Catholic history: 27-7, 33-2 and now 31-6. That's a lot of wins. These guys are warriors. I'm so proud to be able to coach these guys. It will be said to see them go. They're my guys. Any way I can help them down the road, contacts, getting them jobs, they're my guys."

Let me first say what a great run by this bunch. Losing a stud in Ruthsatz had many (me included) thinking they would be a very good team this year but NOT the 9th region champ. So to go the F4 is outstanding. What a two year run for this crew.

 

What CCH usually does to win/close out games is what they did NOT do tonight. It happens. Credit to OHS for raising the temperature a little bit and the CCH boys flying like their rear ends were on fire. Way too many out of control drives. Foul shots missed - especially front end of the bonus. Eliminate those and they win.

 

However, they didin't do that by themselves. OHS helped. #15 for OHS would have been my player of the game. CLUTCH!

 

I sure would like to see Holman play with some fire and effort like Miller did.

 

Lastly, full credit to Bo, Romes, Hepp, Shumate, and CVH for battling their rear ends off down low against the big boys.

While it came in a loss, Matthew Shumate's shot is way up there on the list of biggest shots in CCH history.
