We are probably going to replace our cable with over-the-air tv.

 

Do any of you have any experience/recommendations for what type of antenna I would need?

When Directv and Lex18 had their spat I used a super cheap $10 to $20 RCA 'rabbit ear'

It worked more than fine being out near Wilmore.

 

Now they have ones that are much more less visible in flat square format. If you are in metro Lexington area and not to far from broadcast antennas I bet any name brand would work.

I would think you'd be able to pick up everything with no trouble with a basic antennae.

I recently bought my son a powered flat digital antenna (Walmart $35) which, combined with streaming internet and netflix saved he and his roommate probably $120 per month. They are very happy with the setup. When my satellite contract expires in Septemeber, it is very likely I will do the same thing and save a lot of money.

I just received a notice that Time Warner is increasing my monthly bill $30 a month for cable/internet, so I am looking at going this route. I did some internet research and found an antenna I liked made by Mohu. I went to a couple of stores and there is little to no selection. I bought the GE antenna from Walmart for around $30 and says it has a 40 mile range. It picks up around 20 channels, however, I will only use around 5 of them. I live about 20 miles from downtown Cincinnati and the local channels come in good except CBS (channel 12). That signal is not as good. The antenna is supposed to be installed on the wall, but I am trying to find the best place for it so I have it sitting next to the TV. I have to move it to the middle of the room to get Channel 12. The antenna is sensitive to movement and I assume that is why it needs to be installed on the wall. Whenever someone walked into the room, the picture would freeze. I also bought a Roku box that was easy to set up. I have a Netflix account and started looking for other free channels. Finding channels is like finding apps for your phone. I checked the internet for the best channels and did upload the following that say they are free: CBS Sports, SEC network, History Channel, Animal Planet and some cooking channels. I have not tried them yet to see if they have charges to watch certain programs. ESPN is an issue. The only way I saw to get it was buying a subscription to Sling TV that is about $20 a month. If anyone has any good channels to upload, I would love to hear them!

I'm testing a few options out to cut the cord, or in my case satellite dish. I'm going to try a digital antenna as well as USTVNow, and slingTV through my roku.

 

I have slingTV now. The first draw back with slingTV is you can only watch one device at a time per subscription. Second, for the base subscription you get no broadcast channels. You do get access to WatchESPN, though.

 

USTVNow says that when using a Roku, iPad, or iPhone, you can watch up to 3 devices simultaneously. That's more to my liking. You also get access to the standard broadcast channels, but they are not local. That's not a problem for me either. However, I cannot get WatchESPN access.

 

The digital antenna option presents problems, not only with guaranteed quality reception, but I have to buy an iTV or some other type of adapter to record shows via Roku and a computer to a hard drive. I haven't worked out the logistics yet, so I may be over thinking it. I do that a lot.

 

SlingTV by itself is not an option.

 

If I go with the USTVNow option, I get a DVR. That's $40/mo. Add slingTV for access to WatchESPN, I'm up to $60/mo. That's a savings of $90/mo.

 

If I go with digital antenna, can make a roku/computer DVR work, and keep a slingTV subscription of WatchESPN, I'm spending $20/mo. total. That's a $130/mo. savings.

I'm letting @swamprat be my guinea pig. I will wait to see what he thinks works out best before I even begin to make a decision here. There are very few people I trust for things like this, swampy is at the top of the list. :thumb:

I cut the cord a long time ago. I bought the Mohu indoor digital antenna. It comes highly regarded. Your best signal is going to be a big antenna on your roof but where you are located, you should be able to pick up every channel with an indoor. I believe they sell it at Sams also. I have tried a couple of cheaper antennas and this one was far and away the best.

I went with the LAVA HD 2605. It has 150 mile range.

 

You have to program in your stations. It comes with a rotating unit that turns the antennae to the station. It takes some effort to get all the stations programmed in, but once they are in it goes right to it.

From Lexington you should be able to get Cincinatti, Dayton, Huntington, Louisville, Bowlinggreen, and some of Indianapolis.

Our direct tv dish went out. Hooked up an (powered) antenna to the tv. I get 41 different over the air channels. Already have Amazon Prime and a fire stick. Going to say good bye to direct tv and $109 a month. Will miss HGTV, History and ESPN, but thats about it.
