HammerTime Posted March 18, 2015 Posted March 18, 2015 Gary Parrish @GaryParrishCBS Syracuse University has announced that Jim Boeheim will retire in three years. Seems like an odd thing to announce. Who is going to want to play for them?
Jumper_Dad Posted March 18, 2015 Posted March 18, 2015 So new coach will have one year of reduced scholly's when they come in? Not a fan of him, I don't really care what he does. I haven't had any use for Syracuse since Pearl Washington left...
UKMustangFan Posted March 18, 2015 Posted March 18, 2015 Well, there's goes any chance of Syracuse having success on the recruiting trail the next couple seasons...
Getslow Posted March 18, 2015 Posted March 18, 2015 What a strange thing for a guy to do. I've always liked Boeheim -- as much as one can like a whinging little booger-eater -- and thought he'd do right by Syracuse when he left. Maybe he thinks that's what he's doing. Maybe he's convinced that one of his assistants will be the head man then and so can lead the recruiting efforts through the transition. Whatever. Fare thee well, Jim Boeheim...
Capernicus41 Posted March 18, 2015 Posted March 18, 2015 Still can't believe all this stuff with him just blew over...
Jumper_Dad Posted March 18, 2015 Posted March 18, 2015 Is Syracuse's top 5 ranked class already signed or just committed for next season?
OlDog75 Posted March 18, 2015 Posted March 18, 2015 Is that set in stone? Seems with all his issues lately he won't survive 3 more. Will Mike Hopkins hang around to get the job?
JDEaston Posted March 18, 2015 Posted March 18, 2015 For an announcement to come out like this I think it is a play by the university, rather than Boheim. The chances of high level recruits coming in during the probation period are slim as it is, so this announcement doesn't change much as far as that goes. What the announcement does do is tell potential coaches that there will be an opening near the end of the probation. If they fired Boheim today, it would be hard to convince a good coach to come in and coach them through the probation years. However by announcing his retirement in 3 years, it sets them up to hire a good coach in 3 years, which in turn would bring in the top level players again.

This certainly makes the most sense as to why such an announcement was made. Timing certainly seems odd, but your logic soundly explains it. Never a fan of the guy. He certainly built the program and the brand (and the dome was built on his watch), but you gotta wonder how many other rules he broke while doing so. And while he did build the program, they've done less with more quite a few times over the years, including a few "what the ..." exits in the NCAA tournament.
gchs_uk9 Posted March 19, 2015 Posted March 19, 2015 Will Mike Hopkins hang around to get the job? I was thinking Hopkins had been named coach-in-waiting a few years back but I looked it up and Syracuse never made that official. If so, I'd get it. If not, this announcement is odd.
