Just because I don't know, when did it begin and why would NKY have led to the change? Wasn't it Louisville vs. the rest of the State for a long time?

 

There have been MANY iterations of playoffs over the years. Years ago when there were just 3 classifications all AAA schools were in Jefferson County. People out in the state didn't like a guaranteed Jeff. County champion so it was increased to 4 classes where a state at large champion would play the Jefferson County champion. All schools in Jeff regardless of size were 4A. That went on for a while BUT people started complaining that it wasn't fair that a school from JeffCo was assured a spot in the championship game so it was changed so it was played to the final 4 (2 from Jeff, 2 not) and the state at large schools played the JeffCo schools. Then they started getting 2 JeffCo schools in the championship game and the complaining really started.

1. But it does change how it's suddenly being enforced to make the top title winners and typically the strongest teams in the state play out each opening an easy path to the state finals for anyone on the opposite bracket, and leading to blowout championship games.

 

2. Hmmm... not sure if I got my point across. The new tournament would look like.

 

Louisville 1/Western 2..................Louisville 2/Western 1

 

.........................State Championship

 

Lexington 1/NKY 2......................Lexington 2/NKY 1

 

With the winner of each quarter bracket taking on the one above/below them in the semis.

So why would we call them regional finals then? Nearly every class in every state runs their state tournament through a district a regional then sectional format. Why would there be a need to have one class in your state be run differently. I am quite sure there will always be stronger districts and regions in every class. I do not know any of the politics of past formats and don't really care about them. Get it right now and move on.

I have no doubt what you are saying was true but my question is, is there a need to have special seedings for 6A now. I think you can certainly rotate the 4 region winners but if you do I believe you should do it for all 6 classes not just one.

You misunderstand, while the region names may change I am suggesting we do this for all classes. That way the two best teams in each class make it to the state final regardless of where they're from. That is the fairest and best way to do it.

So you want to remove all geography from the equation? Right now I feel like there is a certain accomplishment in being the best team of your class in a region. Not sure I like taking that out of the tournament.

Again, from a geographic standpoint it probably makes sense and it made sense about 10 years ago when it was done geographically but there were 4 JeffCo districts and someone from outside Jeff Co was always paired against a Jeff Co district in the first round. That wasn't fair so those people pushed for the change to rotate the district matchups. I'm more about pointing out the irony that those that were all for the rotating districts a few years ago are now the most vocal proponents changing back.

Because geography is not the end all and be all of a state tournament. The purpose of a state tournament is to pit the best teams in the state (at every class level) against each other. If you want to discover who's the best in a fourth of the state then have a separate out-of tournament game for the top teams of each district.

Other than splitting the regions, I agree with you. Rotate the semis where the regional champions of Louisville, Lexington, NKY and WKY play different teams each year. The splitting of the actual geographic region for the first 3 rounds does not make any sense for anybody outside of Louisville. It really doesn't make sense for Louisville either except they like the idea of an all Louisville title game.
