2015 Class 6A Preseason Top 10

Featured Replies

You make a good point and honestly it was something I had wrestled with while writing these. However, replacing the districts with regional seeding as suggested in the comment above would solve it nicely. I really do gotta thank you for giving me that idea. That's why debate is so valuable.

How is that seeding thing going to work? Form committees for each class? Does the committee come from that area, if so how do you insure no personal agendas enter the equation? If from a different area, do they know enough about the teams and opponents and how do you prevent favors being passed from school to school? If done by wins and losses all teams will soften their schedule. This is high school athletics and you are operating with very limited funds, no way in my opinion you can pull this off once you factor everything in.

I apologize if I have misinterpreted your stance. I was under the impression that you were in support of Louisville schools based upon your previous posts.

My point on socialism was the system works in theory, but in practice it does not. Poor use of the word great. In theory, your system would work, but in reality it would be very difficult to manage. The reason geography is used is because of ease. That is about the only reason.

I do support St. X, Trinity, Male and Manual, but not because they are from Louisville. I also support Bowling Green, Highlands, Mayfield, etc. I believe that the strongest teams in each class deserve to reach the finals. Like in 2013, Scott County deserved to reach the finals. They were stronger than Male that year, and earned what they got. I fully believe that had the tournament been structured the way I suggested that year, Scott County still would have won state and they would have deserved it. Perhaps Meade County would have earned their trip to the state finals as well, but we'll never know.

Also I maintain that socialism is terrible in theory. Something doesn't work 'in theory' just by ignoring all common sense. In theory, I could sell my old coats for a million dollars each and be rich. That's my point with socialism.

Expand your opinion then. There are eight-nine teams in each region. Schools have ten games in the regular season. Require that six of them must be in region (hardly a problem given that these are the teams they are going to mostly play anyway) and that should give you your seeds. In case of a tie in the standings, either flip a coin or set aside a weekend for a tie-breaking game.

How does seeding by region change anything? In your first scenario you are pitting districts from different regions against each other now it seems you want to remove them all together. I am not following your logic at all.

I thought this thread was about the top 10?

Guess not. :D

Okay, I'll try to make it more clear.

Districts would be abolished. There would be four regions. Each region would be seeded 1-8. The number one of the Louisville Region would play the number eight of the western region, in the upper left quadrant of the bracket, and so forth to the bottom of that quadrant where the number two Western team plays the number seven Louisville team. In the upper right bracket the number one Western team plays the number eight Louisville team, so forth down to the bottom of that quadrant where the number two Louisville team plays the number seven Western team. The bottom two quadrants (lower left and lower right) would be the same using the Lexington and NKY regions.

The winner of each quadrant would face the winner of the quadrant above/below them for the semi-finals and those winners would face off in the finals.

This method, while not perfect, is the closest we can get to complete fairness, in which every team is positioned and able to advance according their ability not luck of the draw. It also ensures for increasingly exciting games all the way to the finals, instead of having blowouts like we have had for most of the last several years.

If it is still unclear PM me your email and I'll send you a mock-up of the proposed tournament bracket.

Nope I understand what you are trying to do. You are creating regions then splitting them 1,3,5,7 & 2,4,6,8. Once again this allows for two teams from the same region to make the state championship game but it does not change the fact that the best two teams could be on the same side of the bracket. It also creates a lot of tie issues with that many teams in a region and travel skyrockets.

It is easy to say we want the best two teams in each class to meet in the state finals, it is just very difficult and a logistical nightmare to do so. There is a reason most states are set up with regional pairings to be played prior to moving on, and I don't like dividing a region based on rankings with tiebreakers.

If numbers was the HUGE advantage a lot of people think it is why is Dunbar such an abysmal football school? They have the largest public school enrollment in the state? How is Highlands able to not only complete with but regularly doninate in their class when they are one of the smaller schools in their class, and now will play in a larger class.

IMO O think you will see Highlands come back to the pack somewhat over the next few years. They no longer accept "tuition" students. So now,, to go to Highlands,, you have to live in the Highlands district. It will be interesting to see how that all unfolds.

Additionally,, I think what Bowling Green has done speaks to the program they have installed. I have much respect for what they have achieved. I think what they have done with the kids that live in their district is much more impressive than say an St. X or Trinity.

I take nothing away from the St. X or Trinity programs. Both schools have done a great job at putting forth teams that are exceptional. My only point for my earlier post was to see if they could achieve the same result with a finite district to pull from. Maybe they will,,, maybe they won't but it would be interesting to see. However,, as long as they can get players from all over they will have a greater chance at repeating.

Like I said it is not perfect we would need a state-wide seed and enough games to make it work, neither of is feasible. It is also true that for example, the number one of both Louisville and Lexington could be the top teams that year and only one would make it to the finals. However, this system drastically cuts down on the chances of that happening unlike the current system. A 48-0 semi-final and 47-14 final should demonstrate how broken the current system is.

I fail to see the 'logistical nightmare' you speak of. The maximum bus ride possible would be four hours from Louisville to McCracken County, exactly the same as Central Hardin might have to take under the current system.

You are right that system would get us closer to a true top final four but it would come at a huge financial cost. Your current scenario would guarantee every first round game be a travel game. Then you factor in the gate lost by having your 8 seed travel at least an hour away to get beat by the one seed. How many fans are you going to have travel for that? You would suffer reduced gates and a massive travel expense increase.

Back to the tread top 10 6A teams.

Uh... every first round game is already a travel game. Unless those two schools happen to share a field.

Also, I dealt with that earlier. The higher ranked team would be the one to travel. Thus the team with the most to gain incurs the travel expenses. Also, their fans are more likely to travel, not that first round games attract that much attention during the current system, either.

Shrug. Make a post about the top ten and who does/doesn't deserve to be in it. Oh, better yet share your proposed top 10. I'd like to see it.

Under the current system all first round games are travel within their respective regions much shorter distance and possibly local rivalry ties. Do you really think the one seeds fans will travel several hours to watch a running clock game and what about how many fringe fans of the local team are going to come out for that? By doing it your way both fan bases will be deminshed.

Diminished from what? Last I checked round one games aren't heavily attended, and you forget that seed 1 vs seed 8 is only four games out of sixteen.

Besides, I'd rather having a running clock game in the first round rather than the semi-finals and finals.
