Mr. No Name Posted April 22, 2006 Posted April 22, 2006 What do you consider fast in HS baseball. 80? 85? 90? I say between 84 and 89 is fast for HS baseball 90 and on up is almost dominating in HS baseball, especially if you have an offspeed pitch to go with it What do you say?
Play 2 Win Posted April 22, 2006 Posted April 22, 2006 First of all, it takes more than velocity to pitch. That being said, If we are talking about a good pitcher, 84-86 mph will win alot of ball games, 87-89 will be tough on even the better teams and a 90+ good pitcher is getting drafted.

Velocity is good, but if you can't throw a strike with it what good is it. Location should be the first thing to learn ( in Little League & Babe Ruth) then put the pepper on it. Location makes the player concentrate & teaches fundamentals. If he does not have this he should not be throwing in High School. All this junk throwing in LL & BR is uncalled for. If a kid learns this young he will be able to throw 82- 86 with other good junk in High School with consitent strikes. :fire: :fire: :fire:

I played against a Kid from Hazard 2 years ago, I think they said he threw 93 mph.
51513 Posted April 22, 2006 Posted April 22, 2006 I think Colby Brown from Rockcastle has hit somewhere in the mid 90's at times. If a High School kid can hit 85 he will win a lot of games for you. If he gets any higher than that, your looking at one heckuva pitcher.
Eagle 8 Posted April 22, 2006 Posted April 22, 2006 80+ Agreed! A guy throwing 80 with any kind of off speed pitch will strike out a lot of hitters in the spring. If he throws strikes he will win a lot of games.
MountainThunder Posted April 22, 2006 Posted April 22, 2006 The best pitch in baseball is strike one. :thumb:
KIDS FAN Posted April 22, 2006 Posted April 22, 2006 I'll take 80-84 with an off speed pitch or two and the ability to throw strikes. Give me 3 of them and you will win any region 12-16 hands down.
D IT UP Posted April 22, 2006 Posted April 22, 2006 Depends on what part of the state your in. But if our state over all I would say anywhere from 83-88 is good. I've seen very few kids that can throw mid 80's and be able to control it.
51513 Posted April 22, 2006 Posted April 22, 2006 Here is another question I thought of just then. Would you rather have a pitcher that can throw 88 with a decent off speed pitch, or a kid with 3 or 4 really good off speed pitches, but can throw his fastball in the mid to upper 70's?

Prolly the first because most HS teams arent going to hit an 88 mph ball unless they a good hitting team, but then if they are a good hitting team and he doesnt have a good offspeed pitch, a Eastern type offense would tee off on him

Majority of the time, velocity is over rated.
