My school of thought is "if you're not willing to solve the problem, don't complain." This would be a much shorter thread if many others followed that same advice.

Not sure which side you're taking with that comment, as I said before, been there and done that, too old to go back but the game still goes on for more kids, however, MANY current officials have made the same comments to me that I've made on here, again, we're talking about ONE game, just take on responsibility for it or keep passing it off and think officials are above what I've said!!

Rulebook says nothing about "whenever there is an advantage gained."

Interpretation words only, what officials say when calling fouls, displacement, verticality, need any more???

No, I've got it. I'm not the one quoting words from the rulebook that do not exist.

A foul is very subjective. It's not black and white in most cases.

Rule #14

I get tired of the "if you don't like it, take a test and show us how it's done" commentary. I don't want to take a test. I don't want to oficiate. The guys wearing the stripes DO want to officiate. And the fact remains, a lot of them aren't very good. These officials get paid, and when you get paid it isn't unreasonable to expect competency. Overweight, out of shape officials lead to being out of position and a lot of missed calls. Clyde is bullish on the rule book, but correct me if I'm wrong, says nothing about the different interpretations of what is/isn't a foul from region to region. When you complain about it the response from different assigning secretaries takes some form like "our numbers are down, and this is the best we've got". And sometimes the "best" isn't very good.

The difference isn't region to region. It's official to official. Every official has a tolerance level/interpretation of what constitutes a foul.

If I "interpret" which IMO is a kinder way of saying not do my job competently, I will be demoted or fired??? Most employers have expectations. Referees are "employed" by the schools/regions/KHSAA that they serve. If they do not do a good job, is there no accountability?

Read the rulebook and tell me how you do not have to "interpret." Impossible.

So just for fun.....I would like to read your responses to my questions from earlier.

When was the last time you saw a Varsity official demoted for poor performance?

When was the last time a referee was fired for poor performance?

Now transfer that over to any other job that you choose and explain to me where the accountability is? Evaluated?

Referees are not employees of the school/region/KHSAA. They are 1099 "independent contractors" for lack of a better term.

There is a required rules clinic held once a year that is mandatory for postseason eligibility. There is also an exam with 2 parts. Part 1 is for newer officials; Part 2 is for upgrade/postseason eligibility. I want to say there are clinics held at certain times as well that officials can attend. Furthermore, officials are evaluated numerous times throughout the season.

No idea. You'll have to ask the assignors how that is handled. Of course, the assignors aren't going to go by what fans say.

Again, tell me how an official doesn't "interpret."

It isn't handled.....that is the problem!

A foul is a foul and should be called accordingly??? The good ones do this----the others just make it up as they go.

A foul is a foul? That's the best you got?

What one official calls a foul, another may not based on their interpretation of the rulebook.

If you explain what a foul looks like that may help us all understand.

Here's the thing people don't seem to recognize. There are three sides to every story (or call): what one side (team) sees, what the other side (team) sees, and what actually happened. You may cry that your team was hacked all night but no fouls were called but that is probably the fan in you. It has been scientifically and medically proven that the human brain sees things and interprets events in a beneficial light. Meaning, you see a foul because it would benefit your team. You don't actually see what happened, you see what your brain thinks happened and those two aren't always the same.

Show me what is says in the rulebook. You seem to think the wording makes it black and white.

The difference isn't region to region. It's official to official. Every official has a tolerance level/interpretation of what constitutes a foul.

But...but...butt...doesn't the rule book clearly outline what a foul is????

And it is region to region...
