March 9, 201511 yr Why should who has more starts matters? Whoever ends up being the best QB is the one who starts. Towles had some moments when he looked great last year, however he also had moments where he struggled and the seemed to be more struggles than good the later the year went on and the more film people had on him. So nothing wrong with having competition. If Towles is the best better QB then he will have no problem keeping his job. Starts will matter in the SEC. I am fine with the competition part, every coach is gonna say that too push both kids. I would surprised personally if Towles isn't the starter though, Stoops is in "must make a bowl game mode." If Towles struggles midseason, then I'd abandon ship and go Barker, I think that gives Stoops more cards to play.

However Barker was the first big recruit Stoops brought in and that was to be his qb. Obviously Barker is going to have to look a lot better than Towles to overtake Towles since he does have the experience. At the end of the day though what matters is putting the best qb on the field then you do that. If that ends up being Barker then you make the switch experience or not.

Not to mention redshirt freshman Qbs have been very successful in college football lately after having their first year to sit out and watch.
March 11, 201511 yr Drew Barker hit Jeff Badet deep down the middle in stride, between two defenders. Throwing darts today. Mikel Horton also running hard. Followed by a nice pick of Barker by CB Cody Quinn on sideline jump ball to Bone.
March 11, 201511 yr Kyle Tucker @KyleTucker_CJ 3h3 hours ago QBs pretty sharp today. Towles with a strike on deep ball to totally covered Garrett Johnson. Nothing Kendall Randolph could do.
March 11, 201511 yr Kyle Tucker @KyleTucker_CJ 3h3 hours ago T.V. Williams. Mercy. Completely lost Blake McClain with a move over the middle.
March 26, 201511 yr Coach Dawson miced up. Lots of energy. Good stuff. Great stuff. (didn't see any mice, though)
March 28, 201511 yr Towles never seemed to progress as a QB. He was the same looking player in game 1 as he was in game 12, the teams just got better. Ultimately, starts don't matter. Because if they did, underclass men would never get a start. I think it's Barker going forward, and there is very little doubt in my mind. And if all game play and physical tools and physical ability were equal I pick Barker every single time. And not to be mean, it takes a really bad QB to not shine against the UK defense. If someone said the secondary has as many holes as Swiss cheese, I'd consider that a big step up. Eliot needs to show a lot of improvement this season, imo, for him to return next year. And I really wish Stoops had hired a special teams coach. That's a pretty big thing to be bad at.
March 28, 201511 yr I hope they get under center some this year. I seen one play in the video. I think the ability to do both just makes you a better team.
March 28, 201511 yr I was fortunate enough to attend this mornings scrimmage that was open to the public. First of all, everyone should be excited about OC Shannon Dawson and what he will bring to this offense. The offense looked much more effective this morning. They were constantly pushing the ball vertically down field, and the running game was rock solid. This offense will be much a much better and more efficient one than we saw last year under Neal Brown. I also came away extremely impressed with redshirt freshman QB Drew Barker. The young man commanded the offense down the field in all of his drives. I believe he threw 2 TD passes and was a Boom Williams broken tackle away from having another one. He looked very confident in Dawson's office and was spreading the ball all around the yard. He looked good on short, long, and intermediate throws. Bottom line, Barker is MUCH improved and this is a legit quarterback competition.

Coach Dawson will be a really good OC and I'm excited to see the offensive unit perform under his tutelage. He gives the QB all of the control and the QB is the only player on offense getting the signals as opposed to NB's system which had the entire offense looking to the sideline for the play. This team will be much improved this season. Barker had a really nice day. He and Fogle had a really nice hook up as well which was great to see. Cold morning, but a great practice. I also thought C.J. Conrad and Blake Bone looked great as well. Secondary will also be much improved.
