Scott County will soon be getting a new stand alone school. This school will start as a 750 student high school with the possibility to be a 1500 student high school when phase 2 is complete. The SC Board of Education left it up to the students and community to come up with possible names for the new school....please enjoy some of the suggestions below!

Georgetown News-Graphic

They asked you for suggested names and mascots for the new, second high school, Scott County, and you answered.

Boy, did you answer.

Suggestions range from the sublime to the silly, from the historical to the hysterical.

There’s “Dodge Ram High School,” (Not encouraging much volunteer support from our local major manufacturer, that one. But it is offset by “Camry High School.”)

In all, more than 150 suggestions were submitted to the Scott County Board of Education, whose members are pondering the choice. Here are a few of the offerings.

How about “Mockingjay High School?” Although “The Hunger Games” fad may be ending soon.

And, for University of Kentucky fans who have had to endure white and red and “Cardinals” for two decades, there are separate suggestions: “Kentucky Wildcat High School” and “Wildcat High School.”

Take that, Rick Pitino.

Some folks suggested immodest monikers: “Right Choice High School.” “The Best High School Ever.” “Trend Setter High School.” “Ultra Modern High School.”

Hungry? Maybe you should attend “Peanut Butter and Jelly High.”

Optimistic? The school could be“Where Wishes Come True.”

There were a few suggestions to honor local and state figures: “Everette Varney High School,” “George Lusby High School,” “Ed Davis High School,” “Wendell Ford High School,” “Addison Mitchell McConnell High School,” “Martha Layne Collins High School.”

And mascots.

Cats or Killer Bees?

Maybe Moonshiners, or Pride.

And then there was a suggestion that’s steeped in local history: “Elijah Craig High School.”

Not sure what the mascot would be for that. A tippler, perhaps?

I think West Scott sounds better than West Scott County. Playing off the current school being the Cardinals, I'd go with West Scott Wildcats and be blue and white.

I liked these three:

Elijah Craig High School

Wendell H Ford High School

Georgetown Sr. High School (Only if it will be in city)

High School will be located by Western Elementary School off of 460. In the city limits but about 3-4 miles from downtown.

There used to be a Georgetown High School until the mid-1970s. Technically it was called Garth High School, but everyone called it Georgetown. They were the Buffaloes and wore green and gold.

Garth and Georgetown High School were two separate schools. In fact Garth was one of the schools that consolidated to form Georgetown High School.

Who else consolidated? I know Sadieville, Stamping Ground, and Great Crossing (?) all merged to make Scott County High. Who else was there to join with Garth to make Georgetown?

This link above is to the KHSAA directory in 1951. It lists all schools in alphabetical order and when it comes to "G" there is Garth, with Georgetown in parentheses. There is no "Georgetown High School" listed. I'm not from there and I could be wrong, but I've researched these old schools for years and everything I've ever come across shows GARTH as the official name and GEORGETOWN as unofficial, not unlike Blazer High School which everyone calls Ashland.

My best guess is that they'll go with a namesake, and at first blush after skimming over the list, I think "Wendell H. Ford High School" is a pretty good possibility - especially considering the fact that he just died back in January.

Personally, I think McClelland High School or McClelland Station would be pretty cool names (named after the army outpost built in Georgetown by John B. McClelland at the beginning of the Revolutionary War).

I would all but guarantee that any school names or mascots referring to bourbon/boourbon making/bourbon makers/bootlegging/moonshine would be an absolute no-go.

Martha Layne Collins should have went with the Trailblazers as their mascot, woulda been fitting with her being the 1st female Governor of the state.

No, Collins dropped the ball by not going with the Governors as their nickname, a la Austin Peay.
