IOC is maybe the most corrupt sports organization in the world. Agree! Many in Brazil are ticked over the costs not only for this, but the World Cup last summer.

Again, you can't go telling some city that, after months of prep, "You're not getting the Olympics." The IOC -- like their partner in crime, FIFA -- are getting exactly what they want out of Brazil. Lots of expenditures, lots of payments, lots of easy money. The Olympics and World Cup are going to places like Brazil, Russia, and Qatar because they've figured out they can extract money and new projects from these weak, corrupt governments while going to Europe or the USA usually means a big fight over projects. Just look at how Chicago residents reacted to that proposal. For all the crap we give our politicians, it's horrifying to watch these places in which people really have no recourse with the officials that are supposed to be working for them.

There needs to be ONE permanent site for each the summer and winter Olympics. Somewhere in a civilized, stable, non-third world country...which really narrows down the choices of course, but rightly so. That way you can continuously maintain and update, when need be, one location each. Having two or three locations for each would be a huge boondoggle and waste of resources I believe.

But then, doesn't most every Olympics lose millions of dollars? So why fight over the right to lose millions, especially a 3rd would country that doesn't have it to lose anyway? Not that even someone like the US has it to lose either. But once the initial expense of the first "permanent home" Olympics is outlaid, it should pay for itself and maybe even turn a profit eventually.

Putin's friends made a killing off Sochi and I can only assume that a select crew of loyal developers and contractors are set to make a fortune in Rio.

Put a strong, unbiased organization together, pick two spots, and most all of that will go away. But I'm a realists...I know that is likely to never happen.

I'm with you; I'm a big soccer fan and I've watched a select group of countries try for years to reign in FIFA with the only result being that they're on the outside looking in now when it comes to the big decisions. You're absolutelt right: it's near impossible to reform these massive international bureaucracies. Not only do those benefitting from the corruption want to keep the status quo, but organizations that large have a natural inertia that makes changing them extremely difficult under even the best of circumstances.
May 12, 201610 yr So everyone must be excited to go! Zika virus President impeached Hooray. My understanding is that they have still only sold around 65% of their event tickets. London was at roughly 95% sold by the time they were three months out. Rio is sucking wind trying to make ends meet to cover their costs.

That wouldn't be too difficult. Move those events to Uruguay.
