February 26, 201511 yr Just another of a list of problems. This one pretty disgusting. Hey guys, lets all go down to Poop Bay and spend the day. Experts Say Waters Tabbed For Rio Summer Olympics Still Swamped With Sewage | ThePostGame Despite promises that it would be cleaned up, the waters outside of Rio remain unsanitary just 18 months before the Summer Olympics are to take place. Now the city is admitting that promises it made to improve the water quality likely won't be kept. As reported by USA Today, the bay where Olympic sailing is scheduled to take place remains a cesspool of human waste. Environmentalists monitoring the bay's condition are outraged at the lack of progress made by local authorities to improve the water quality ahead of the Olympics. “There are parts of the bay where you are literally inside a latrine where hundreds of thousands of people defecate daily,” Mario Moscatelli, an independent biologist, told USA Today.
February 26, 201511 yr No surprise here. They've basically bulldozed huge sections of slums in order to make way for the Olympics. I love the event, but what these countries and cities do in order to host them is absolutely unbearable. Harder to deal with it all the time.
February 26, 201511 yr Well, hopefully the IOC will play hardball, tell Rio and Brazil, clean this mess up, or we will postpone the Olympics a year, as we intend to use another city if this isn't cleaned up as promised. I think that after spending billions of dollars to host the games, the threat of not being able to host will get things done pretty quick.

February 27, 201511 yr There's zero chance they'd postpone the Olympics. But the threat. And they can go with the truth, the health concern. Or, how about saying "Ok, we can't change the location, but what we will do to punish you for lying to us about fixing this issue, we will ban Brazil from competing". Again, just the threat and maybe someone down there wouldn't want to take the chance and will fix it.

Again, just the threat and maybe someone down there wouldn't want to take the chance and will fix it. That's great and all, but they're stuck. You can't tell some third-world country that, "Yes, we're bringing the Olympics there" and then decide that it's not a good fit. Too many logistical issues.
February 27, 201511 yr Yes I know, BUT the IOC needs to play hardball. Again, yes I know they won't change, but if Brazil feels the heat from the IOC, that may get something going. Option B, as I mentioned, AGAIN, won't happen, but if they threaten to not let Brazil compete, then they may do something to fix this issue. Brazil made promises and they need to be held accountable. But their feet to the flames.

Again, you can't go telling some city that, after months of prep, "You're not getting the Olympics."
February 27, 201511 yr The IOC — arguably the most corrupt org ever — is in no position to be dictating anything. Again, you can't go telling some city that, after months of prep, "You're not getting the Olympics." Yes, Yes you can, It's very simple really. 10 simple words "If you don't have this issue fixed, you will not host". LOL! They said that they would have the issue fixed, they are not going to do it. It's not that they can't do it in time, it's just that they don't want to do it. Or, tell them that their team can't compete (as I said before) until they pay, lets say several million for not living up to the agreement, i'm sure that they will find a way to come up with the money. And hey, then use that money to fix the issue. It should be very easy to extort Brazil if the IOC is so corrupt. But, If you had to compete in that filth, would you even go?
February 27, 201511 yr to the original premise of the thread, JS hit the nail on the head in one word. Corruption. Only reason in the world overgrown slums like Rio get the Olympics in the first place. Scary to think how many people worldwide live like this, or worse. IOC has at least shed some light on that (unintentionally of course) with some of their recent choices as hosts. I'd say all Olympic games should be held in the US, Canada, or Western Europe. But, that would sound like a blow-hard WASP, coming across as a snob. Plus, a documentary I just saw on the 1980 Lake Placid Olympics, pointed out that the athletes were housed in a prison (literally). That's cozy.
February 27, 201511 yr Well' date=' hopefully the IOC will play hardball, tell Rio and Brazil, clean this mess up, or we will postpone the Olympics a year, as we intend to use another city if this isn't cleaned up as promised. There isnt a city in this world that can prepare to host the Olympic games in 1 year. Just go to Rio and learn to appreciate poo water is what the IOC would say.
February 27, 201511 yr I've said it before, Olympics need 2 or 3 permanent sites for Summer games and 2 or 3 for the winter games. With the money generated going into keeping those venues up to date. IOC is maybe the most corrupt sports organization in the world.
