August 11, 20179 yr No. I would think the sweeter the better. For years I bought the red sugar mix trying to get hummingbirds in my yard. Maybe saw one or two. This year I made my own sugar mix and have several every day. Thanks!
August 15, 20179 yr I have 5 hummingbird feeders around my front porch. They feed from all of them but one Don't know why. Something I learned is they will feed while it is raining.

Is it the same feeder...or the same feeder location? (Didn't know if you had moved the "unused" feeder around to different spots or not.) If it's the location, I've heard that some birds won't use a feeder they don't feel safe at. So, maybe there's something that they feel threatened by nearby. Other than that, I got nothing.

I think you have solved the problem. I do have a rain gage right beside it that has a large dragon fly on it. Thanks I will move the gage and see what happens.
September 27, 20178 yr My brother's in-laws sent my wife and I a really nice bird feeder as a housewarming gift. It's called the Squirrel Buster Plus...and it's worked flawlessly for the week we've had it up. I've got it filled with black oil sunflower seeds. I also went ahead and got a suet feeder to see if that would increase interest from birds, although most of them seem most interested in the sunflower seeds. Thus far I've seen cardinals, house finches, goldfinches, black-capped chickadee, and a few visits from a downy woodpecker. There's been a bluejay hanging around a little, but I haven't seen it at either of the feeders yet. So I've currently got a suet feeder and the feeder I mentioned above out in my yard, and I've had a RIDICULOUS number of birds on a daily basis over the last month in particular. There are usually a handful of chipmunks and squirrels sifting through the sunflower seed hulls under the feeder as well. It generally takes 2-3 days for the birds to go through the entire 3 quart capacity of black oil sunflower seeds in the big feeder, so there's always an abundance of sunflower hulls on the ground underneath the feeder. Anyway, I went out to light up my grill on Monday afternoon and got buzzed by a red tailed hawk taking off out of the yard. It'd been on the ground near one of the feeders. I walked over to the general vicinity of where it had been standing in the yard, and found bits and pieces of at least two chipmunks. Then I found a leg and part of the tail of a squirrel underneath the big zelkova tree in my backyard. Anyway, I refilled both feeders, and neither of them has been touched since Monday. I haven't seen a single bird or chipmunk, and I've seen exactly one squirrel. Wonder how long it is before I get any action back at my feeders.

Did you solve your problem with the one feeder not being used? Forgot all about asking you if the fake dragon fly ended up being the issue or not.

Yes the dragon fly must have been the problem. I moved the feeder and they started coming to it. Thanks. I would never had thought that would be the problem.

Glad it worked out for you. I would've never thought a dragon fly would be intimidating, but maybe to hummingbirds it looked like CWB's red tailed hawk. :lol2:
May 30, 20188 yr It's the time of year to bring it back. What birds are you seeing? I've seen plenty of: Red winged black birds Brown headed cow birds Downy woodpecker Cardinal Black capped chickadee Opiliated woodpecker House sparrows Juncos Morning doves Blue jays Western tanagers Several more that i couldn't even name. Even seen a few hummingbirds down in the wildflower patch.
May 30, 20188 yr I had an indigo bunting at my feeder over the weekend...the first time I've ever seen one, and it was pretty cool to see. I've had a group of 3 or 4 common grackles that have totally housed the suet I've put in my feeders over the last couple of weeks. I'd like to figure out how to run those off because they don't let any other birds around while they're at the feeders.
May 30, 20188 yr I've thought about putting feeders in my neighbors yards to keep the birds out of mine. I can't keep my pool deck clean of bird crap. I've taken out every tree in my back yard which has helped but they still use my pool as a party place. Might have to have get me some cats.
