Playoffs are a reward. Period. In any sport-football, basketball, baseball, softball, table tennis, air hockey, checkers, chess, or video gaming. Playoffs are an opportunity to capitalize on what you have accomplished in the "pre" and regular season. It is an opportunity to go up against the best teams in the state. I see what VOR is doing here, and I deserve the jab, however, it is unnecessary because neither you or I are the one whom is receiving the jab. It is the kids who are out on the field or court who are, not only getting multiple jabs, but a knock out punch to their seasons and their self-esteem. "Oh man, the six of us (yes there are basketball teams with six players) are going to have to play the number five team in the state...Great...Let's go try our best to score fourteen points". That not only hurts the players, but hurts their love for the game, the hunger they might have for the game, and their outlook on life. It's ridiculous. This thread is ridiculous because you aren't making a point, but rather just shoving it in the kids faces.

FYI ... the point of this thread is that the complaints listed in the thread opening post happen every fall during the football playoffs. I started the thread as a sarcastic way to make the point that lopsided playoff games happen in every sport.

I still go back to the fact: The game is for the players, and the players don't want to play in the playoffs when they have no chance of winning and it is definite they are going to be embarrassed. They have spoken, listen to them. It's easy for the ones not playing saying, "Let them play", but the players don't want this "Opportunity".

Now, now young man ... don't take it personally. This topic was beat to death before you ever came on board here. I appreciate you being consistent and saying the standard should be the same for all sports. The point I am making is that most people on this topic who want the rules to be different for football than other sports need to rethink their position.

I'm keeping it consistent because it occurs in every sport. The kids look at high school sports as jokes these days, unless you are at a WINNING program. That's because the atmosphere there is to win a championship. At these schools that go 0-10, what is their hope? "I want to win a regular season game because God knows we don't stand a chance in the playoffs!" No. They should be like "I want to make the playoffs this year!" Why do you think Texas football is so competitive? Because they work to earn it, then take advantage of the opportunity.

 

I'm not taking it personal to myself. I am taking it personal to the fact I sat there and witnessed it all myself: football, basketball, and track. I'm going to be honest, most North Eastern Kentucky schools, four years ago, thought track was a joke. And they were the ones sitting there saying, "I dont know why I'm here. I woke up at 6 am to come here and get eleventh place, and my coach knows it."

 

Personally, it is not fun to play these games because I want to compete just as the next man. But how am I going to be able to compete if the person over top of me just stands there--PURPOSEFULLY??? These games are absurd and THE PLAYERS who get obliterated don't want to be there. It hurts the reputation of the KHSAA when they hand out playoff bids. Why do you think college football only has a four team playoff? Because it makes the games significantly more competitive. This is a wasted subject due to the fact my point has been made and it will stand for years to come.

 

I will have to deal with telling my children and grandchildren that I won 77-6 in my first ever playoff game as a starter. "Who'd you play grandpa? You must have been great!" What do I say? "Well the other team wasn't very good. I barely played. This guy that I went against never came towards me so I ran over to him and just buried him in the dirt" No. I'm going to be honest with them and say, "well sometimes in life, there are mistakes. Some people think that everyone should get an equal opportunity to search for the same desired achievement. However honey, that's not how life goes. Life isn't fair and nothing is going to come easy. You have to work for what you want and what you desire. That team shouldn't have been there."

 

This playoff system is ridiculous for 1A and 6A. Now, I cannot speak on behalf of 6A, but I have played against a lot of 1A teams and I can speak in their behalf and they don't want to play the first round games, the ones who are 0-10, 1-9, or 2-8 that is. And the sad thing is, these teams are all in the same district, and they play each other and that's their best chance to beat anyone, when they all have 16 players. And yet there is still a loser. And that loser gets rewarded in the playoffs to come play a team that will likely make it to the semi finals and finals? No. Either you earn the spot, or you don't. And they didn't. And they (THE PLAYERS) know it. It's sad. It's taking away from the game.

It on no way damages high school athletics in Kentucky.

That's why I said I couldn't speak on behalf of other people than 1A contestants. The 1A contestants don't want to play the first round of the playoffs because the opposing team, in which my case was, did not want to be there all four years. And they told me themselves. I don't want to play a game like that. They don't either. It's easy fur us to say "Woo Playoffs!!!!" but it isn't affecting us, it's affecting the players. And there are places where they keep track of when they make the playoffs, because back in the day, you had to earn it to get in due to super districts. Raceland has a sign with years we made the playoffs and when we won games in the playoffs, when we were district champs, and when we were regional champions. Places do hang banners for when they make the playoffs because back in the day, it was a reward! It was earned. It wasn't a given. There are years we haven't made the playoffs. Sucks. But that is what builds a program. Not doing a dang thing to a program of you make it every year.

What it does is send a message to other states saying huh, Kentucky isn't a football state. I had an argument earlier today in one of my classes about Georgia football compare to Kentucky football, and you want to know what he said, "Don't everyone make the playoffs?" And I explained it and he said, "Well that's why yall aren't very good at football."

 

Playoffs should be a reward of regular season success. Period. No ifs, ands, or buts. Best teams go head to head.

 

Kentucky isn't as good as Georgia and other surrounding states due to smaller population and less players to draw from, not because of first round blowouts. Winning in the playoffs is the reward, no one that I know looks at "Making the Playoffs" as a reward any more in football than they do in any other sport. The reward comes from playing and WINNING.

 

Look I'm not going to change your mind and your biggest complaint about it being some kind of a reward isn't enough to convince me either.

Are they still hanging banners for making the playoffs? If so that's lame. If it's old banners from back in the day that's great.

I'm at the Atherton/Trinity game. It's 61-14 with 4 minutes left. Atherton got their 1st FG at 5:30 in the 4th. I can tell by their faces and body language they would have rather not played this game.
