February 24, 201511 yr When is the KHSAA going to fix this? Did you see the scores in some of these basketball games tonight? 80-14; 88-16; 72-11; 91-29; 92-18. Why are we even playing these games? These teams should have to do something to earn a place in the playoffs. A team with a 3-20 record is in the playoffs! 5-17; 1-21 ... yes, that's right. A team with a 1-21 record is in the playoffs. Did anyone even show up to watch these games? I am sure these schools lost money playing these games. What a joke!! I am sure these kids didn't even want to play these games. Why would they want to go out there against teams that much better, bigger and stronger and take a chance on getting hurt? Somebody needs to do something about this.

February 24, 201511 yr Author Your sarcasm is noted. Yes ... and no. I don't think those screaming these same comments in the fall are being sarcastic.

February 24, 201511 yr But "Some" would argue (wrongly in my opinion) that these games are not playoffs. That these games are the equivalent of football regular season round robin district schedules. And that only 2 teams from each district "Make" the basketball playoffs. Remember I Do Not feel this way... but some do.
February 24, 201511 yr I graduated from high school in Florida and the basketball team has really been crap since 1998. Anyone in Kentucky remember Myron Anthony?? :lol2: Anyhoo, he was on the last really good team they had in late 90's and recently was checking Florida playoffs to see if they had qualified. I was shocked to see they did, but then realized they had a losing record and did nothing to "earn" the spot. So it appears this isn't just a Kentucky problem.

Difference is in Kentucky every high school team in every sport (except for a few in football) are in the playoffs.
February 24, 201511 yr Can play multiple games in a week where football can not. I don't have a problem with the football playoffs but there is a big difference on how games can be played.

I think a few teams saw their season come to an end tonight in a game that wasn't part of their regular season schedule.
February 24, 201511 yr And Heritage played last week, maybe the only game of the week and Ryle had to be rusty with no practice or maybe limited, should've been a nail-biter. We all know that Ryle was not in condition and out of rhythm.
February 24, 201511 yr The long exciting history of the Kentucky High School Basketball post season has forever given opportunity to 100% of its teams to play in their respective district tournaments with the chance, however small for some, to survive and advance. In a season where some teams have had dismal results throughout, this one district game, although the odds may be stacked very high, is at least a game that has larger meaning than any game in their entire season, for it gives them the opportunity to take aim at a major upset, however unlikely, and advance their season at least one more game, if not further. OK...so perhaps 99.9% of these games end with expected lopsided results, but in a season of perhaps 25 games, it's just one more game before the players see their season come to a close. One more game to put all of their hopes into, and see if just by chance, they could be, in timely fashion, hitting their stride and perhaps manage to find for themselves an exciting victory with tons of meaning. It's just one more game, and probably not as hard on the weaker team as you might imagine. They really at this point have nothing to lose, and everything to gain. If they lose as expected, they get on with their lives. If they manage the upset, then Wow!... what a memory of a lifetime. The one true season champ, and every team being able to take a stab at the prize is what makes Kentucky High School Basketball unique and exciting. It's been a tradition for many years. Last year's champ Covington Catholic, was the 35th district runner-up. In a world where teams who lose in tournament play go home, this one unique facet allowed CovCath to advance to the Regional tourney, and then to the State Sweet 16 to ultimately win all the marbles. Leave tradition alone...it's been exciting all of these years, and once you start messing with it, little by little before you know it, everything that's been exciting about will be gone, and then Kentucky High School Basketball will start to resemble every other state in the nation with multiple classes. There's still people in Indiana kicking themselves for ever allowing change to happen to their system, and now find themselves hopping over to Lexington in the month of March to relive some of that long forgotten excitement.
February 24, 201511 yr Here's the condensed version of B-Ball-Fan's post. Don't fix it if it ain't broke. And it ain't broke. End of papa's public service post.

B-Ball-fan ... I agree. Leave it as is and leave the football playoffs as is. FYI ... the point of this thread is that the complaints listed in the thread opening post happen every fall during the football playoffs. I started the thread as a sarcastic way to make the point that lopsided playoff games happen in every sport.

Teams that bad shouldn't be in the playoffs, although I would argue that the district tournament is more a part of the regular season. Why don't you start a petition and let's get this changed.
