Duke has 8 scholarship players????

Featured Replies

It doesn't matter if it's 13 or 15, it still seems Coach K has failed miserably on the recruiting trail by not building depth.

Yep. Duke sucks. Welcome to the season.

You know me better than that. I'm not a Duke basher. I would have the same questions about any major power school that had those issues. I mean, 8 scholarship players? That's got to catch up with them at some point.

I'm sorry, but how does this happen? Duke is one of college hoops' flagship teams. You only have 8 scholarship players in extreme situations. Like Indiana a couple years ago. I need real explanations ASAP.

Why?

There are no split scholarships in high D-I.

....in football, MBB and WBB, and volleyball.

I will say a team voluntarily carrying fewer than 13 makes little sense. At the very least, give them to the walk-ons that have busted their tail day in and day out.

Is it possible that any of their players have academic scholarships and were not in need of using a BB scholarship? Just asking because I have no idea on the possibility of that? The thought just crossed my mind. This could explain why they are not using more than the eight. Perhaps they have some very smart "walk ons"?

Against UK's depth comes to mind. Duke 8 good enough to be a top 10 team without more help from the bench. Maybe top 5 but definitely top 10.

A lot of UK fans view Duke as a serious threat, with that said they would probably say the same about UL, UNC and Kansas had the Cats not previously beaten them.

No. That would still count against an athletic scholarship. The exact wording for the 13 student athletes in D1 basketball is: 3) Financial Assistance to all undergraduates includes ALL forms of student financial assistance including athletic and academic scholarships, grants and other financial aid.

If they started out with 10 scholarship players, 9 of which were McDonalds All-Americans how many do you think they planned on playing? They could replace a McDonalds All-American with another one at all but one position. That sounds like plenty of depth to me. I'm sure losing 2 players was not in the plan.

Similar to UK a few years ago when Kanter was lost for the year, it left UK with 10 scholarship players. One of those players was a traditional walk-on.

AJG, it is a fair question to ask why would they ever start out with 10? There is no rationale for not using them (schollies), and you certainly need far more than 10 kids to have adequate practices on a daily basis.

I'm not calling you a Duke basher. I'm saying they suck because they do. They aren't going to win the title this year. I don't see it.

As for the scholarship stuff I'm not sure why they rolled it into the season with only 10 guys on scholarship. I can only guess that they wanted to fill all 13 scholarships and couldn't for whatever reason. I've not heard it discussed by anyone so I don't have an explanation for you.

There was a good article written and released recently that explained Duke's scholarship problem. I'll try to find it . From what I remember it seemed a bunch of things happened over the last 18 months that were hard to plan for.

Sorry, dawg. That's your explanation. One was kicked off the team and another transferred. I don't know what else to tell you.

If K would learn how to platoon, depth wouldn't be a problem. He would have the transfer at Syracuse(don't know how to spell his name)that burned them in the first half the other night, Murphy and Sulaimon. That will eventually send them to an exit long before the Final Four
