Jumper_Dad Posted February 17, 2015 Posted February 17, 2015 I saw this story and it got me to wondering how many people these days can drive a Manual Transmission "Stick" Car or Truck? California carjacker thwarted by confusion over stick shift
UKMustangFan Posted February 17, 2015 Posted February 17, 2015 Nope. Never tried, see no point to it.
Jumper_Dad Posted February 17, 2015 Author Posted February 17, 2015 The premise for asking my wife out the first time was to teach her to drive a 5 speed. She had made a comment that she didn't know how, so on our "first date" I taught her how. I must be the "Clutch Whisperer" I had her driving a 5 speed in less than a 1/2 hour.

Jumper_Dad Posted February 17, 2015 Author Posted February 17, 2015 Nope. Never tried, see no point to it. I understand that, but IMO if you really like to drive there is nothing like driving a stick on a curvy country road.
Chatty Cat Posted February 17, 2015 Posted February 17, 2015 Absolutely. Drove one from my freshman year of college until 2013 (let's just say that's a LONG time!) LOL I miss it at times.
UKMustangFan Posted February 17, 2015 Posted February 17, 2015 I understand that, but IMO if you really like to drive there is nothing like driving a stick on a curvy country road. May be true. I hate driving, and avoid it as much as possible. :idunno:
plantmanky Posted February 17, 2015 Posted February 17, 2015 Learned to drive a stick on an 69 ford Dump truck on Construction sites, split axle shifter. Easy peasy after that.
bugatti Posted February 17, 2015 Posted February 17, 2015 My first vehicle was a stick. It was cool being one of the few high school kids that could drive one, but I came to hate it after no time. It got so old. Nothing worse than traveling somewhere and being in a city with a lot of traffic. I think people just enjoy it because of the nostalgia associated with it. I liken it to people saying television was better 40 years ago. No, it isn't. I also knew how to operate a "three on a tree" and I drove some bigger vehicles that required "splitting the axle".
mcpapa Posted February 17, 2015 Posted February 17, 2015 Drove a standard twice in my life. Had to take my best friend to the hospital for two checkups into downtown Baltimore. Ford Maverick, 3 speeds on the column. That was close to 40 years ago. No real problem, but I've never HAD to since then and don't care if I ever have to again.
Jumper_Dad Posted February 17, 2015 Author Posted February 17, 2015 City driving and "Stick" don't go together very well, I hate it.
bugatti Posted February 17, 2015 Posted February 17, 2015 City driving and "Stick" don't go together very well, I hate it. I considered jumping out of the vehicle at one point because I was so miserable. Worst was one time I was in downtown Nashville on a steeper hill and had to parallel park. Cars behind you honking. Ugh.
nWo Posted February 17, 2015 Posted February 17, 2015 I've have no problem driving a stick. I've driven at 8 speed International Harvester Cab over and a speed Freightliner.
Content1 Posted February 17, 2015 Posted February 17, 2015 Back in the mid 80s a family I used to carpool to school with was kind enough to sacrifice the clutch of their Toyota Celica :lol2:.... actually it went very well. Until I fell into a great deal on an automatic Toyota Tercel at age 23, my first two vehicles were standard shifts.
malachicrunch Posted February 17, 2015 Posted February 17, 2015 Pretty much can drive anything. Weirdest one I was in was a box truck with an autostick.
