They lowered the seams on the college baseball compared to years past. IMO, this is a direct result of the NCAA ticking the coaches off with the BBCOR bat restrictions. College Baseball was more popular than ever and the NCAA came in and took away their most valuable asset, offense. So what does the NCAA do to combat their screw up with BBCOR? They lower the seams on the ball to match the specs of the Minor League ball.

Now, opening weekend doesn't always have the best matchups of the year but considering pitching should be ahead of hitting at this point, there were an awful lot of runs scored this weekend. I have no data to back that up but when I went through the scores it seemed like a lot more runs, as a whole.

Good to see and I hope it's a trend. If we want to watch a 2-1 game with great defense we will watch MLB, but I enjoy both types of games.

I think things will adjust out over time and in my eyes, if they want to go on in MLB, they'll need to learn to adjust. I like to watch a well played game and not routs. A few years ago some of the scores reminded me of football games. There I go again, showing my old school side.

All levels realize there has to be some offense. MLB is talking about shrinking the strike zone in order to generate more offense in 2016.

Committee members made the decision to change to a flat-seamed baseball after research conducted this fall by the Washington State University Sport Science Laboratory showed that flat-seamed baseballs launched out of a pitching machine at averages of 95 mph, a 25-degree angle and a 1,400 rpm spin rate traveled around 387 feet compared to raised-seamed baseballs that went 367 feet.

It's already too small.

To be clear there's a difference between making the official strike zone smaller and how the umpires actually call it.

Fair enough, I'm just one of those purists (and an ex pitcher) who loves to watch a 1-0 or 2-1 game.

There is a balance between your ultimate game and the ol' 9-8 games of the growth hormone/steroids era.

That's the committee members way of saying, "We really screwed up changing the bat specs as drastically as we did and to avoid litigation we'll change the ball instead of bat standards again."

The only game I saw this weekend that had few runs, was the Cal State Fullerton/USF game Friday night. It was a 2-1 game, with both teams tallying 31 strikeouts between them. CSF had 16, USF 15.
