Would football players do well in a race?

Wonder what would happen if Stuart Lips from Paintsville and Ron Blume from Jchs ran a 100m race? :walk:

I have never seen Lips run. I know that Blume can fly.

Fast kids are fast kids period, I would say they would do well in a race, but in the longer runs, lack of form and practice might be an issue.

Not sure, but I do know Max Pafunda of Pikeville bested Blume in a 100m heat just before spring break. (Somebody said Blume was complaining of an injury just following the race though; so he may have been hampered??)

Max is our kicker (and a HECK of one at that); he plays soccer so we don't really get to see that speed on the football field (except for the leg-speed used in kicking the ball). But is a great kid, a hard worker, and appears to be one of the kids to watch in the Single-A state track meet this year.

His ambition is to get a shot at a D-1 soccer scholarship for next year (not many scholarships out there for kickers in football, unfortunately)...I don't know much about what D-1 soccer coaches look for, but with the kind of speed, athleticism, and size/strength he has (5'11, 180), I'd think he would be someone they'd want to look at.

Stu has a nice long stride and can really move. I noticed his speed last year on the football field when he caught several players from behind. This kid has a motor that never quits running. As for who would win between them, IDK. Let's line them up and see!

It would depend on whether you're talking about Herschel Walker or Refrigerator Perry.

Sounds great, but this was a team event, so its hard to tell who would win in a head to head race. Glad to see him and all the other Tigers doing well on the track.

Ask Lynn Camp's team. There relay and other events consist of football players and they have been competing at state for a while now. Rockcastle used to have their football players out and they would go to state in relays all the time as well.

I have heard that Coach Tom Larkey is a bigtime proponent of track and field and how it relates to football. I don't remember Rock having track before he got there in the mid to late 1980's. I think he has been a track coach before as well if I am not mistaken.

They were just as close as you could get to neck to neck at the hand off! I was there.:ylsuper:

Yes he started the track program in 1991. That was the first year of organized track at Rock. They also built the track that year at Rock. He was the coach for 10 years I believe. He was also the track coach at Laurel County for a while when he was there. He got it going at Laurel County as well.

I know some guys who ran track for him at Laurel County.

I'm not sure if I got the idea behind this thread correct, but to me fast is fast. Whether a person plays football really has no bearing on how they would do in a race. A few years back Justin Miller and Bo Smith were studs on the football field in the fall and studs on the track in the spring. Football didn't set them back any as far as I am concerned.
