Would football players do well in a race?

Featured Replies

I'm not sure if I got the idea behind this thread correct, but to me fast is fast. Whether a person plays football really has no bearing on how they would do in a race. A few years back Justin Miller and Bo Smith were studs on the football field in the fall and studs on the track in the spring. Football didn't set them back any as far as I am concerned.

I agree. Most (not all) solid sprint relay teams consist of football players. I have seen a lot of guys who were track fast, but were too hesitant on the football field and didn't play as fast. I have seen others who were pretty fast on the track, but played much faster on the field. The skills transfer pretty well from one to the other and I think they actually do work hand in hand. That is the reason that coaches like Larkey insisted on having track programs as an aid to football players in their speed and agility. For the linemen the shotput and discus is good for explosiveness and body control, skills that can directly impact their ability on a football field.
