100% correct. NUC, Best of The Midwest, etc add no value to the recruiting effort what so ever. They just post numbers that nobody making recruiting decisions looks at. Stick to the college camps and don't over due it. Don't let pride prevent you from looking at lower levels of football.

I like the Under Armour/Rivals and Nike Camps & Combines that are free. I have also received alot of positive feedback on the NUC stuff and I know the Combine that CoachJ runs in Louisville is very effective.

 

We tell our guys to save their money and go to the camps of the school they want to attend, or go to the BCS camps like UK or Ohio St. that include alot of smaller NAIA schools, D2, D3, etc.

 

The value in these events comes from getting the college to watch your video. With Hudl, the college coaches have more video than they can ever watch. UA, Nike, NUC, CoachJ, individual college camps, & BCS School camps are the best options. Save your money for those events, or if you can get into the free UA / Rival & Nike events, do those.

 

The other combines that charge, I am not as knowledgeable, and we encourage our guys to spend the money on camps that we know can be effective.

These "camps" are mostly money makers as are the combines that big universities have in the summer for high school juniors and seniors. Just because a quarterback can throw pitch and catch, means very litte. This does not show how a quarterback can read a blitz, adjust to receivers getting knocked off their routes, or deal with pressure around him. These "camps" play on little Johnny's ego that he will be the next Tom Brady, and everyone wants to be ranked as high as possible. It means basically nothing except that they can brag that "hey I am ranked # whatever at this position", and insert your recruiting service here. Also, Tom Brady was a sixth round draft pick in the NFL. Have no idea what star he was ranked coming out of high school. I saw on an espn article that Tom Brady said that when they measured his 40, high jump, etc. at the NFL combine, he said they were terrible. I think he worked out alright.

The most frustrating thing about these events, is that you do not walk away with constructive criticism. Now that by itself, would add a lot of value.

Yes, I've worked at several of them and they are usually filled with kids that will not receive an offer even if they go to every camp in America.

My son was ultimately recruited and signed based on tape evaluation and on campus interview only. We attended at least 40 camps/combines over a 3 year period. The most frustrating thing about these events, is that you do not walk away with constructive criticism. Now that by itself, would add a lot of value.

 

You hit the nail on the head. If a school is interested in the player, they will bring them in for a one on one meeting, and talk nuts and bolts about the program, and how that player could help the team. As for the camps and combines, when there are 300 kids there, it is just a money maker for the school. Not going to get much feedback unless the player is on their top recruit list.

Yes, it is free, (but does incur T&L expense) but it is essentially a service for the recruiting press (247/Rivals etc). Again, no real recruiting value, just massaging the ego of the recruit.

I think camps can help or hurt a kid. If you have all the tools for D1. Go to as many as you can. Meaning size speed. If you lack in one or more the camp can hurt you. Offers can come from camps but also from film only. In my case it was film only. Offers from coaches who had never even been to a game of his or seen him in person. Heck offers that came with out the HS coach evening knowing about them. The flip side is offers that did come from camps. At the end of the day he signed with a school that never timed his 40 took his height or weight. Just loved the film and came to the HS and watch him practice. If a school offers you PLEASE do not go to their camp!!

Also know what I mean by size speed. size kid plays OLine min height 6'2. This is FCS height also if your that short you better be pancaking every other play on film. This will be a guard or center. Tackle 6'4 and up. The taller you are the less domanit your film can be. Meaning. If a kid is 6'6 290 is not killing people he might still get offers. Why he's 6'6 290! D1 coaches see the what ifs. What if he in our system for x amount of years. You can't teach size. speed. 4.6 is nothing special for a 5'9 165lb kid. But a 6'2 220lb kid now that's fast!!

Kids can be stubborn. They need to hear the harsh realities coming from someone other than a parent. Getting feedback out of evaporators was like pulling teeth.
