I honestly haven't given it too much thought. I'm not a big "place the blame" guy... Bummed out that it happened, looking forward to next season.

I think he wanted to force the Seahawks into making a decision. He had the lead, and the Seahawks had to score a TD. If his defense stops them, he wins, and I have to believe he trusted his defense. Even if he calls a timeout and they score, it's not like they would have had a ton of time to come back and tie the game, and certainly not enough to maybe take the lead. By not calling a timeout, all the pressure was on the Hawks to make the right decision and score a TD in the heat of the moment. I think if the Pats had a 3 point lead or less, then maybe the Pats call a timeout to preserve some time, as even stopping the Seahawks would likely result in a tie game, since a field goal is nearly automatic from there.

 

If Patriots called a timeout and Seattle scores the next play they would have had 40-50 seconds to get a field goal. It could have been done.

66 TD passes from the 1 TD line this year and just 1 int. Bad result doesn't mean worst call of all time.

 

And the 1 interception... it's the one that everyone is talking about.

My point: I think I'd take Pete Carroll as the coach of my franchise and I'd feel fine about doing it.

 

The Seahawks have had a pretty good record under his watch. Honestly, in terms of the results, I Carroll's body of work is much the same as John Calipari has had at UK when you look at it closely.

Honestly, pretty similar records in a job where they had to come in and rebuild if you look at the team's win percentage relative to the rest of the league and where they finished up the year in the Playoffs. It'd be crazy if people were saying that Calipari made the dumbest play-call ever and it cost UK the National Title game. I think it's just as nuts to say that Pete Carroll cost the Seahawks the Super Bowl on "the dumbest playcall ever". If you look around the league, there aren't very many coaches who have resumes that would indicate that they can even get to the big game as much as Carroll, much less win it. Just because we can sit back with hindsight being 20/20, and maybe even have a good point, doesn't mean Carroll isn't a great coach or that this whole thing should define him.

But Carroll's choice, according to statistics (in the link that Joker posted), had a better chance of succeeding. Remember, in 5 chances from the one this year, Lynch had only scored once.

True. But what if they didn't score?? That timeout gives Seattle an opportunity to think, get personnel situated, etc. And it saves Seattle from using their final timeout. If you call that timeout, you might as well let Seattle score. Again, in my opinion, he was trusting his defense to make a couple plays.

Your comparison is flawed. You put a player in with a 33% chance of success. Thus far this year 100% of those passes had resulted in a score or an incompletion.

Agreed, from a comparison standpoint I probably chose a bad example, but that wasn't really my point. I was addressing Jokers comment that if UK lost on a coaching call, nobody would blame Cal. We all know they would want to string him up.

Even Dusty would have ran the ball in that situation. That tells you how stupid the play call was.

Everyone criticizing this decision cracks me up. If this pass would have been completed and the Seahawks would have won then all of you all saying these things would say what an amazing play call the Patriots thought they were going to hand it off! WOW! Lynch IS NOT the best back in the league on goal to go plays and I think Russel Wilson is the reason you were in the game so let him win it. Just my opinion

At that point, you are probably throwing the ball the next two plays as you cannot stop the clock if you run and get stopped. With the time remaining, and one timeout, in order to have all plays available (should you need them...remember, no guarantee Lynch score), you're only going to get one chance to run the ball. Throwing when they did, at least gives them a run or pass option on 3rd down and 4th down, which makes things a little harder to defend.
