Should the Bengals dump AJ Green once his contract is up?

Or even before that?

3. A case against paying A.J. Green?

Everyone knows having A.J. beats not having A.J. He makes every game more exciting to watch. There's the numbers, the ability, the juggling, yada, yada, yada. But take a peak around at the receivers playing in the Super Bowl. Who would you say was the biggest name among them? Julian Edelman, converted Kent State quarterback? Jermaine Kearse, undrafted out of the University of Washington? Brandon Lafell, Panthers cast off? These two teams offered the latest validation that receiver may be one of the most overrated positions in the game in terms of relation to wins.

Teams need to invest in the quarterback, cornerbacks as well as offensive and defensive lines. The rest of the pieces can be plucked and coached up. Post that philosophy up against the concept of dropping mega millions on Green whenever the negotiations on his extension begin (currently signed through next season, then could use franchise tag on him twice, if necessary). and it makes for an interesting argument. Green will show up at the table asking for Calvin Johnson money and the Bengals could point to a game like this and wonder how many pieces of their defense would have to go in order to lock down one of the best in the world at a position looking more and more overvalued with each championship club. Food for thought.

Walkthrough 2.2: Three Bengals Super Bowl takeaways

I find myself giving AJ a hard time because of his no-showing in big games, some dropped passes, etc. -- but we all know losing AJ would be a monster setback.

I get frustrated at times because I know how good he can be...his potential is sky high.

Yes.

He's very good, but I think WRs are becoming more and more "dime a dozen" players every year.

I would love to package AJ and Andy to a team for a real QB and maybe a DT.

I'm sure they'd love to too. Those kind of deals almost never happen in the NFL though.

I'd offer AJ to every team in the league in exchange for a 1st round pick. They'd get at least a couple bites.

Where would you find that QB? Is there a scenario out there where it's plausible? If they were serious about dumping AJ, I'd think a trade for a first round pick in this year's draft would be outstanding if that could transpire.

I think they could get a 1st and a 2nd or at least a 2nd and a 3rd.

And if the Bengals are thinking that in any small way drafting a WR high wouldn't surprise me.

That was the pipe dream part of this idea.

I am with you guys, I would use AJ for more high draft picks.

It's Dalton that will be tough to deal, sort of. But wouldn't you need some kind of contingency in place? I know we bang on Dalton, but what is the alternative?

None right now.

I agree Andy is our guy right now. Hopefully something changes in the near future but I am not going to lose sleep over it.

Not a chance they should do that! Only way they can do that and have a chance to be successful is if they get a top notch QB here then that doesn't need a top receiver to do well. So unless trading Green gets us a top QB in return, then no chance I get rid of him.

I would do that in a heartbeat.

100%

Agreed, which is the only way I would do that. Unless we are getting a top notch QB in return that doesn't need a top receiver to do well, then it makes no sense to dump him. QB and the Head Coach are probably the two things that are stopping this team.

He's been graded outside the top 15 for the past two seasons by Pro Football Focus. AJ is a very good receiver but not sure I'd fork out top five money.
