As Neerfan pointed out, he's graded out of the top 15 WRs the past 2 years. He's going to be looking for top 5 money. You don't overpay him simply because he's your best offensive player (which he isn't).

 

Defense and running the ball is the formula to win. You don't need the superstar WR. This team needs to focus on 2 major areas. OLine and defense. Solidify those spots, with the running game they have, and they'll be very successful next season with or without AJ. Getting a couple additional high draft picks will help in the process.

Agreed that the Bengals have made some dumb moves over the years but there is no way you strap the organization with a huge WR contract, especially to a receiver who has some question marks with respect to toughness, big game ability, injuries, etc etc. I say you try and get picks for him next season.

How much is that due to the QB? Dalton won't make any WR look great. I think it's AJ that made Dalton look good a lot more than the other way around.

 

With that said, if I were AJ I'd be looking to get the heck out of dodge. The organization has no clue on how to win and with a QB who is simply bad with no sign of improvement at that position for at least a couple years, I would pack up and take my services elsewhere. I would be willing to bet Belichick would love to have AJ in NE.

^Not for a 1st round pick he wouldn't. NE will address their WR needs either through the draft or by getting a veteran such as an Andre Johnson or Larry Fitzgerald type. Not a guy that they'll need to break the bank to get.

You trade him and get draft picks? So now you add another weakness to the roster. Our QB has a hard enough time completing passes with him, now you want our QB to not even have him? People talk about defense and a running game and that is all great and all. However you don't win Super Bowls like that either when your QB can't complete passes when they need it. The only teams who have been able to do that are teams who have defenses that were one of the best of all time those years in the Ravens first super bowl and the Bucs. Signing Green would not hamstring this organization, they actually are set up very well with the salary cap. Then if Dalton fails again this year, they can easily get out of his contract. So signing Green would not hamstring them at all. You only trade him if you know you can get a top QB in return.

Defense and running the ball is the formula to win, when you have a QB who can complete passes when they do throw. So as of right now with Green or no Green they won't win if Dalton can complete passes when it matters. Which he hasn't done that in 4 years now. Just look at this year, the Bengals were in the top 10 in the NFL in running the ball and might have been top 5 actually. Yet Andy Dalton had his worst year of his career. So having a good running game did not help his play much at all. So yeah you can get rid of Green and keep trying to improve the running game and defense but none of that matters if Dalton can do his job well.

 

The Bengals are set up well financially even if they sign Green. Because if Dalton does fail again, they could easily get rid of him and then lose his big contract. So they are set up well to sign him and not hamstring themselves for the future. You only get rid of Green if you know you can get a QB who doesn't need a top WR to complete passes.

 

(Btw I do think Green being out of the top 15 does have a lot to do with who is his QB. The best ones Dez Bryant, Calvin Johnson, etc. they have QB's who do have flaws but they are also QB's who can throw the ball pretty well and don't stare down receivers either.)

So if your team is sitting very pretty in terms of salary cap you still wouldn't keep him? The Bengals have most of the talented guys they want to keep locked up for years now. Their not in the position like the Pats who would have a hard time giving that kind of money and not effecting the whole team in other spots. Signing Green would not have an impact and strap them down financially for years to come. Especially since they could get rid of Daltons contract after next year.

 

As I mentioned I am fine with getting rid of Green if we did have a QB who could make throws that matter. However if Dalton is going to be here, then Green is important to have. Green is still a guy that every team still double team and keep a safety over the top on, unless a team has a lockdown like a Revis. So having Green also helps the running game. We seen what happened both times against the Colts without Green. The Colts just loaded the box, and dared Dalton to beat them. If we have Dalton, then having Green is even more important.

To GreyFox, the Bengals would have to get something big in return for passing on Green. That is the point I am making. I wouldn't just "get rid of him."
